Gaels strike late to pickup 3-1 win on Seniors Night

KKINGSTON, Ont. (October 17, 2018) - The Queen's Gaels (9-5-1) scored twice late in the match to defeat the UOIT Ridgebacks (4-11-0) 3-1 at Miklas-McCarney Field.

SENIORS HONOURED
Prior to the match the Queen's men's soccer team honoured their graduating veteran senior players with a special presentation. Kyle Owens, Brevin MacKay, Keven Mastri, Andrew Kim and Antoine Noel were all honoured and received a special gift.

GAME FLOW
It was a cold and windy evening at Miklas-McCarney field and neither team was able to find their scoring touch in the opening half despite some good early chances from the visiting Ridgebacks who controlled possession early.

The offence erupted in the second half with all four goals in the match coming in the final 45 minutes. First, the Gaels took a 1-0 lead off the foot of MacKay. The lead didn't last long though as Quintyn Walcott evened the score just one minute later for the visiting Ridgebacks.

Queen's continued to apply the offensive pressure and were rewarded in the late stages of the match. First, in the 82nd minute, Zachary Toupin snuck a shot past the keeper Nicholas MIller of UOIT. Nicholas Theodorakakis followed up just five minutes after the Toupin strike to put the game out of reach and secure the victory for Queen's 3-1.

PLAYOFF PICTURE FORMING
The OUA playoff picture becomes a bit clearer for the Gaels. They know they will host an opening round playoff match but whether they host as the three seed or four seed is still to be determined. The Gaels sit just two points back of Toronto for third but the Varsity Blues have two games left while the Gaels have just one. Either way, their first-round opponent will be either Nipissing or Laurentian.

BY THE NUMBERS
5 - Graduating Seniors
3 - Game winning streak for the Tricolour
5 - Saves for Gaels keeper Alexander Dimock
24 - Total shot attempts for the Gaels in the match

UP NEXT
The Gaels will close out their OUA regular season this Saturday when they visit the Carleton Ravens at 3:15 pm in Ottawa.
