Nipissing escapes Memorial Centre with 2-1 win over Queen's

KINGSTON, Ont. (October 13, 2018) – The Queen's women's hockey team (1-0-1-0) fell to the No.10 Nipissing Lakers (1-1-0-0) in a physical battle at the Memorial Centre on Saturday night.

GAME FLOW
The Gaels had full control of the first period but weren't rewarded for their efforts until Caroline DeBruin made her first impact of the game. On the powerplay, she sent a puck towards the net which was deflected in for the game's opening goal.

It has been a successful debut for the Cornell transfer who now has two goals in her first two games as a Gael.

The second period was a completely different story for the Gaels as they were shut down by the Lakers. They were held to just two shots throughout the frame and allowed Nipissing to tie the game.

Sam Strassburger tied the game at the ten-minute mark of the second period for her first goal of the game.

Queen's came out of the second intermission with a completely different mindset, as it was they who vastly outshot the Lakers in the third period 11-2. But despite the disparity in shots, it was Nipissing who would be the lone team to strike.

Strassburger scored her second goal of the game with just six minutes remaining for what would be the game-winning goal. Strassburger scored five goals last season but is already on pace to surpass that number with two goals through her first two games.

The Gaels ramped up the pressure and got some good opportunities on the net late but it wasn't enough as time expired handing the Lakers the win.

BITTER RIVALRY
Including today, the past six meeting betweens these two teams have been one goal games dating back to January of 2017. It is no secret that there is a rivalry brewing between these two teams with the level of play on the ice and the amount of physicality.

BY THE NUMBERS
3 – All three goals scored in the game were on the powerplay. There were 12 powerplays in total, eight for the Gaels and four for the Lakers.
28 – The Gaels peppered Lakers' goaltender Danika Ranger with 28 shots on the night, however she stood her ground picking up the win for the Lakers.
40 – Makenzy Arsenault has made 40 saves through the first two nights of the season.
