KINGSTON, Ont. - The Queen's Gaels are hosting their annual Tindall Invitational tournament this weekend as they welcome Acadia, Laval and Alberta to the Queen's Athletics and Recreation Centre.
FRIDAY
LAVAL vs ACADIA
The first game of the tournament saw the Laval Rouge et Or from the RSEQ take on the Acadia Axewomen from the AUS conference.
The game was evenly split through the opening half with Acadia holding a slight four-point lead. Laval brought their defence in the third quarter shutting down the Acadia offence and holding them to just eight points.
Laval stayed the course and held on for an 86-70 win. The Rouge et Or were led by Sarah-Jane Marois who had 17 points and seven assists while Jayda Veinot paced the Axewomen with 16 points and five assists.
QUEEN'S vs ALBERTA
The home team took the court against the Alberta Pandas in what turned out to be a tight defensive tilt between the Canada West and OUA schools.
Just 19 total points were scored in the opening quarter and Alberta struggled to put up points in the second frame as Queen's doubled up the Pandas offence in the quarter 16-8 to lead by five at halftime.
The third quarter was the difference in the game as Alberta came out of the break on fire dropping 28 points on Queen's in the quarter. The Tricolour kept things close but ultimately fell 64-56.
Queen's was led by
Marianne Alarie who had a game-high 23 points while adding five rebounds and three steals. Alberta's Emma Kary finished with a double-double scoring 19 and hauling down 10 rebounds.
SATURDAY
LAVAL vs ALBERTA
The opening game on Saturday saw Laval Rouge et Or pick up a 76-63 win over the Alberta Pandas.
Â
It was a lopsided first half as Laval took a 47-31 advantage into the break. However, the Pandas turned things around in the second half and forced a more competitive ballgame.
Â
Claudia Emond led the way for Laval with 15 points with teammate Jane Gagne chipping in with 14 of her own.
Â
Alberta had four scorers reach ten points or more (Brooklyn Legault, Emma Kary, Vanessa Wild and Mackenzie Cook), however it wasn't enough to keep pace with the balanced attack of Laval.
Â
ACADA vs QUEEN'S
The Gaels bounced back from Friday's loss to pick up a nail-biting 72-70 win over the Acadia Axewomen.
Â
It was a hot start for the Gaels who limited the Axewomen to just 13 points in the opening quarter. They would eventually take a 36-29 lead into halftime.
Â
However, the Axewomen got back into the ballgame in the third as the Gaels were outplayed after the break. Acadia would outscore Queen's 24-18 in the third to shrink the deficit to just one, 54-53.
Â
It was a back-and-forth final quarter as both as the lead was traded multiple times by both teams. However, the Gaels managed to squeak out the two-point win in a close affair at the ARC.
Â
Acadia was led by Haley McDonald who put up 25 points on 9-28 shooting. They went to her frequently as their top scoring option.
Â
Meanwhile, the Gaels had a top scorer of their own as
Marianne Alarie had a game-high 29 points. She shot 11-26 from the field including an incredible 5-11 from three point range.

LAVAL vs QUEEN'S
Laval capped off a 3-0 weekend as they handled the Gaels 80-49 in a blowout win.Â

Laval's strength was the three-point shot as they clicked at nearly 40% hitting nine threes throughout the game.
Three players had over 10 points for Laval as Carrie-Ann Auger (17), Jane Gagne (16) and Frederique Beauchamp (14) were the top scored for the Rouge et Or.
