GAELS THIS WEEK – Women’s rugby hosts Western in Game of the Week

Gaels This Week

GAME OF THE WEEK
The Gaels women's rugby team hosts Western on Saturday at 1 pm at Nixon Field in the game of the week. Admission is free and the game can be seen live at OUA.tv.

Women's Rugby
The Gaels women's rugby team (0-1) will continue their regular season, returning to Kingston for their home opener at Nixon Field this Saturday at 1 pm against the Western Mustangs (0-0).

The home opener follows a tough 38-31 defeat on the road at Guelph against the defending OUA Champions last Saturday. The Guelph matchup saw a tied game in the final minutes at 31-31. The Gaels suffered a last minute defeat however when the Gryphons were able to break through the Queen's defence from a few yards out to score the match-winning try and conversion that held up to finish the game.

The Gaels will be looking to bounce back against the Mustangs and pick up their first win of the 2017 season. Saturday's matchup will be the first game of the season for the Mustangs, as Western had a BYE during the first week of regular season action.

Last year both the Mustangs and the Gaels finished with a 3-2 record. The last time these two teams met was when Queen's drew Western in the OUA bronze medal game last season – a game in which the Gaels fell 27-20.

Women's Soccer
Coming off a six point weekend, the No. 5 Queen's women's soccer team (2-0-0) will look to keep their winning streak rolling as they host the Carleton Ravens (2-2-0) and the Ottawa Gee-Gees (3-1-0) in back-to-back games this weekend. Both matches will see a 1pm kick off time at Richardson Stadium.

Last year the Ravens finished with a 7-4-5 record compared to an 11-4-1 standing for Queen's. The Gaels met Carleton twice last season, coming away with a 1-0 win and a 4-2 defeat during conference play. While Queen's enters play with a clean sheet, the Ravens suffered a 2-1 loss to Ryerson before rebounding with a 2-1 win against Toronto last weekend.

Sunday will see the Gaels women's soccer team take on the No. 10 Ottawa Gee-Gees (3-1-0) in a battle of two nationally ranked programs. Like the Gaels, the Gee-Gees will enter play with back-to-back wins. A 1-0 win over Ryerson followed by a 6-0 victory over Toronto allotted Ottawa six points last weekend.

The last time the Gaels and the Gee-Gees met was during the OUA playoffs, when Queen's triumphed over Ottawa in a 1-0 overtime thriller to qualify for the OUA Final Four. Ottawa capped off their regular season that year with a 9-3-4 record.

Admission is free for all Queen's regular season soccer games, don't miss the action at Richardson Stadium.

Men's Soccer
The Gaels men's soccer team (2-0-1) came away with six points last weekend in their matchups against Laurentian and Nipissing. Queen's will look to find further success at home as they host the Carleton Ravens on Saturday at 3:15pm at Richardson Stadium.

The Ravens finished with a 10-2-4 record compared to a 7-5-4 standing for Queen's last season. The last time the two teams met was during the regular season last year – a game in which saw a 1-1 draw in Ottawa.

The Ravens are coming off of a two point weekend, with two ties under their belts. The Ravens drew 1-1 against at Toronto and 3-3 at Ryerson.

One player to keep an eye on is Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa) who had three goals last weekend for the Gaels. For his efforts he was named the OUA and U SPORTS male athlete of the week.

Admission is free for all Queen's regular season soccer games, don't miss the action at Richardson Stadium.

Men's Rugby
The Queen's men's rugby team (1-0) will continue their regular season on the road again against the Laurier Golden Hawks (1-0) in Waterloo at 1pm on Sunday. The Gaels opened their regular season on the road last weekend with a 60-0 victory at Trent.

Entering play, both teams bring with them a pair of wins. Laurier's season opener last Sunday saw the Golden Hawks defeat Toronto 38-10 on the road.

The last meeting between Queen's and Laurier ended in a tricolour victory, with Queen's toppling the Golden Hawks 67-5 during the regular season – a season that Laurier concluded with a 2-6 record compared to a 6-1-1 finish for the Gaels.
