Gaels defeat Waterloo on Sunday, Rams go 3-0 to win tournament

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Queen's Gaels men's volleyball team starts their exhibition schedule this weekend as they host their annual Queen's Invitational tournament. The Gaels will welcome the Manitoba Bisons, Ryerson Rams and Waterloo Warriors to the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) this weekend.

FRIDAY
Manitoba 3, Waterloo 0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-18) BOXSCORE

Queen's 1, Ryerson 3 (38-40, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23) BOXSCORE

Markus Trence and Jonathan Reid each had 20 kills for the Gaels but it was the Ryerson Rams that took a 3-1 win at the Queen's Invitational.

The opening set of the match went to an astounding final score of 40-38 as the two teams continued to go back and forth with neither side letting the other take the set. Finally it was the Gaels who pulled ahead and took their 40th point of the set for the win.

From there the two teams played tight throughout each of the next three sets with just nine points separating them in total. Queen's was out of gas after the extended opening set and the Rams had just enough to take the 3-1 win.

Manitoba and Ryerson are each 1-0 after day one after the Bisons took down the Warriors 3-0 earlier in the evening. 

SATURDAY

Markus Trence was a force for the Gaels once again on Saturday night putting up 20 kills but he was outdone by the Manitoba duo of Scott Vercaigne and Adam DeJonckheere who tallied 15 kills apiece to lead the Bisons to a straight sets sweep of the Gaels.

Zane Grossinger and Thomas Ellison had 21 and 11 assists respectively while the Bisons also saw a strong performance from Dustin Spiring who had six kills and three blocks.

The Ryerson Rams were also winners on Saturday sweeping the Waterloo Warriors to move to 2-0 on the tournament. The Rams will meet the Bisons for the tournament championship at 1pm Sunday followed by OUA rivals Queen's and Waterloo at 3pm.

Queen's 3, Waterloo 0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-22) BOXSCORE

Sunday saw the Queen's Gaels pick up their first win of the tournament taking down OUA rival Waterloo in straight sets.

Markus Trence hit double-digits in kills once again for the Gaels getting 10 in the match while Thomas Ellison finished with 24 assists, three aces and three blocks.

The battle of undefeated teams at the tournament ended with the Ryerson Rams claiming their third victory to take the tournament title. Ryerson took a 3-1 win over Manitoba.
