The Queen's football team (0-4) will be looking to pick up a win on the road this Saturday when they make the long trek to Windsor to take on the Lancers (0-5). Game time is set for 1 pm.
Exactly halfway through their regular season now, the Gaels have had a tough first half facing three nationally ranked opponents – the then ranked No.9 Ottawa, No.5 Laurier and No.4 Western.
Last weekend, the Gaels suffered a 48-10 defeat on the road against the Western Mustangs. The Mustangs controlled the game early, up 23-0 in the first quarter. Starting the second frame, Queen's was able to get on the board as
Nick Liberatore (Dartmouth, N.S.) connected on a 34-yard field goal as the Queen's offence started to gain momentum.
After the defence held Western to a field goal,
Nate Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont.) went to work. He started off a Queen's drive with a big 27-yard pass completion to
John Bews (Pointe-Claire, Que.) who jumped up to bring the ball down amongst the Western defenders.
Hobbs then found
Alex Zulys (Toronto) for a 17-yard reception and followed up on the next play with another pass to Zulys, this time for a two-yard touchdown. Queen's cut the deficit to 26-10, but the Mustangs kicker Marc Liegghio took over as he hit five more field goals for a total of six on the night en route to the 48-10 win for Western.
Queen's and Windsor both enter Saturday hungry for points following tough starts to the season. Last weekend, the Lancers were defeated by the Gee-Gees on the road.
At Gee-Gees Field, Ottawa came out strong against Windsor, scoring a safety and three touchdowns in the opening quarter, mostly on the arm of Alex Lavric who threw two touchdowns. The second quarter improved for Windsor as they marched down the field for a score and later forced two fumbles halting Ottawa drives. The Lancers went into the half down 30-7. Closing out the game with a late touchdown in the fourth frame, Windsor fell 39-13 to the Gee-Gees in the nation's capital.
This weekend, Queen's will look to bounce back from their last game and steadily rise as the second half of the season commences, starting with the Lancers on Saturday.
The last time these two teams met was during the 2016 regular season that saw a 55-5 Homecoming win for the Gaels over the Windsor Lancers in front of a crowd of 8,011 at Richardson Stadium.
Last time out, the Queen's defence stood strong and limited the Windsor offence to only nine first downs and 131 yards. The Gaels held one of the OUA's top running backs, Terrence Crawford, to only 58 yards on the day.
This weekend marks the 15th meeting between these two teams. The Gaels lead the all-time series 9-5 over Windsor.
Keep an eye out for
Nick Dowd (Gananoque, Ont.) in Lancers territory. The fifth-year linebacker leads the Gaels defence with four sacks, good for the fifth spot on the OUA sacks leaderboard.
Head coach
Pat Sheahan is narrowing in on a couple of milestones in the win department, with 95 regular season and playoff wins at Queen's, and 149 regular season and playoff wins in his career. A win would put the current longest-serving U SPORTS football coach at the 150 mark.
