OTTAWA (February 17, 2017) - The No.10 Queen's Gaels lost in double overtime to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in Ottawa on Friday night in the second game of their best of three series. The third and deciding game will go Saturday night in Kingston in OUA men's hockey playoff action.
GAME FLOW
The pace was even in the opening period with Ottawa firing 12 shots on
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) compared to 10 Queen's shots. Ottawa went the the powerplay first in the game as
Graeme Brown (Kingston, Ont.) picked up an early interference penalty. The Gaels were able to kill the penalty off and keep the game scoreless. Nearing the mid-way point of the period a point-shot made its way through to the front of the net and the rebound popped out to
Ryan Bloom (Calgary) who potted his first of the playoffs into an empty cage. The Gaels closed out the opening period with a 1-0 lead over Ottawa.
Just 56 seconds into the second period Ottawa was able to tie the game at 1-1. Mathieu Newcomb broke in down the left wing and fired a quick short side shot above the shoulder of Bailie and into the back of the Gaels net to tie the game.
The Gee-Gees took their first lead in the series at the 2:30 mark of the third period as Brendan Jacome scored to put Ottawa out in front 2-1. The Gaels fought hard looking to tie the game up and were rewarded with a powerplay in the late stages of the game. Ottawa goaltender Graham Hunt turned away Gaels powerplay attempts to keep his team in front.
As the Gaels continued to push late in the third they were finally rewarded.
Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) spun at the top of the circle and fired a shot from the half boards that snuck between the pads of Hunt to tie the game in regulation. The Gaels and Gee-Gees then went to overtime for the second time in as many games.
Bailie was sharp in the first overtime period, he gloved down a deflected shot to keep the game alive and then halted a scramble in front as the Gee-Gees controlled the offensive pressure.
The game once again needed double overtime and at 8:07 into the second extra frame Necomb picked up a loose puck off a turnover and beat Bailie to send the series back to Kingston.
