After a successful showing at the Canadian University Rowing Championship last weekend a number of Queen's rowers remained in British Columbia to train and compete at the RCA National Rowing Championships and Canada Cup.
Starting off the competition for NRC's saw the Gaels competing in time trails to set seeding for the rest of the weekend. After performing well in each of their races,
Gavin Stone and
Louise Munro would race quarterfinals for the M1X and W1X respectively. Both would progress after quarters to the A/B Semi Finals, joining fellow Gael
Alexander Bernst, also seeded well in the LM1X A/B Semi.
Greta Chase would race the repechage after her time trial and be seeded into the C Final.
The following day would see stellar racing from all athletes in their respective Semi Finals, with Munro holding on to the 3rd overall ranking for the W1X, her and Stone would again progress well and be seeded into the A Final. Bernst would advance to the B Final.
The final day of competition for the National Rowing Championships would again see amazing competition across the board.
Louise Munro would go on to place 3rd in Canada, 9 seconds behind Olympian Carling Zeeman. Winning the overall Heavy Women's Single bronze, and also the Silver medal for U23 women.
Gavin Stone, placing 5th overall, would match the silver win for Heavy Men's U23 single.
Alexander Bernst, winning the B final would finish ranked 4th overall for U23 Lightweight Men, lastly
Greta Chase would finish 6th in the C Final.
Despite the weekend full of racing, the Gaels rowers were not finished. Canada Cup, occurring the day following finals, would see Stone, Munro, and Bernst placed into composite boats to compete in both 2000m and 500m races.
Stone in the Ontario Men's 4X would win Gold in the 2km alongside Luke Gadson, Charles Alexander, and Lucien Brodeur. Munro, competing in the Ontario Women's 4X would also win Gold after both the 2km and 500m races, Bernst in the Ontario LM2X would match this with Gold medal performances in the 2km and 500m.
With the on water season finally concluded, the Gaels look ahead to RADAR testing and indoor training, continuing their high performance off the water.
