Queen's football announces first recruits for 2017 Steele and Boch

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 14, 2017) - Queen's football head coach Pat Sheahan is pleased to announce the signing and commitment of quarterback Brendan Steele (Kingston, Ont.) and offensive lineman Jeffrey Boch (Ottawa) to the Gaels football program.

Steele comes to Queen's from the local high school Frontenac SS where he was the star quarterback with the Falcons. In 2014  Steele, a converted receiver, stepped up after the starting quarterback suffered and injury and led the Falcons to an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) bowl game victory 24-20 over the Richview Saints. The following season the young pivot lead the Falcons to a KASSAA championship win 35-14 over Regiopoliss-Notre Dame before falling at OFSAA to W.F. Herman. This past season the Falcons lost out on the KASSAA title 30-28 to La Salle in a game that was played at the newly revitalized Richardson Stadium. At OFSAA, the Falcons once again narrowly lost out in a dramatic 19-18 defeat at the hands of the Crestwood Mustangs.

Steele played for the Kingston Grenadiers during the summer months in Kingston. This past season Steele and the Grenadiers were the OVFL Wettges Conference Champions for the first time since 2004 and lost in the provincial championship 54-28.

"Frontenac has had a very prolific last few years, and he (Steele) has played a pivotal role there," said Sheahan on the newest quarterback for the Gaels. "We are getting a great student with a terrific leadership capacity as well."

Boch is a 6-7, 285 lbs lineman from Ottawa who played football with the Kanata Knights in Ottawa's National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) and attends All Saints CHS. In 2016 he was named an NCAFA all-star with Kanata in 2016 and trains with Elite Performance Academy in Kanata.

"He was the premiere offensive line prospect coming out of the National Capital region this year," said Sheahan on the recruit. "He has a great mix of athletic and academic prowess, a great body size, passion for football and he is an aggressive young man with a very bright future. We really look forward to working with him."
