Toronto, Ont. (September 16, 2016) - The Gaels spoiled the Varsity Blues home opener Friday night when they stormed through Toronto and earned an 89-0 victory.

Jordi Di Nardo (Toronto) got things started for Queen's with a try inside the first four minutes. Di Nardo picked up her second try of the game before the 19 minute mark to give the tricolour a 17-0 lead midway through the first half. The opening 40 minutes came to a close on a last minute try from
Pippi McKay (Toronto) and one of
Erin Geddes (Lindsay, Ont.) four successful conversions to give the Gaels a 52-0 lead at halftime.
Harlee Bruce (Lakefield, Ont.),
Lauren Murray (Lindsay, Ont.), and
Dominique Rumball (Scarborough, Ont.) each contributed one try in the first half, with Rumball adding two conversions.
With 15 points on a game-high three tries,
Miranda Seifert (Regina) scored twice in the first half before getting Queen's first of the second half within three minutes of restarting play. From that point on,
Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) took over the game. Coming off the bench, Popov finished Friday's contest with a game-high 17 points on two tries, two conversions, and a penalty goal when Queen's decided to kick for points.
Sadie Stephenson (Oakville, Ont.) and
Emma Faught (Ottawa, Ont.) added to the Gaels tally with tries of their own, before McKay punctuated the game with another last minute try.
