GUELPH, Ont. - The 2016 OUA Curling Championships ended the same way the 2015 version did...with the Laurier Golden Hawks on top on both the men's and women's sides. For a second straight year, the Hawks completed a 'double gold' performance and are off to the CIS Championships (March 20-23) in Kelowna, B.C. Joining Laurier on the men's side at nationals will be Waterloo and Brock. On the women's side, Brock and Guelph will head west alongside Laurier. The event will be hosted by the UBC Okanagan Heat at the Kelowna Curling Club.
The Gaels men`s team fell just short of a medal and trip to the CIS Championship after a strong start at 7-0 in round robin play. After dropping their semifinal to Waterloo the team drew Brock for the Bronze, the Gaels managed to tie the match in the fifth end at 3-3 but Brock pulled away to take it 7-3.
On the women`s side, the Gaels finished with a 5-2 pool play record but needed to break a tie with the Guelph team who had an identical 5-2 record tying Queen`s for the final playoff spot in Pool A. The Gryphons wrapped up the match with six points in three ends and Queen`s settled for a seventh place finish overall.
With the strong showing from the Gaels teams they were honoured by taking up five OUA All-Star spots, four on the men`s side and one on the women`s side.
