Thunder Selects Tournament: Gaels finish 2-1 at holiday tournament

HALIFAX - The No.5 Queen's women's basketball team is in Halifax, Nova Scotia for the Thunder Selects Invitational exhibition tournament.

DAY 3: Queen's 77, Dalhousie 48

Queen's finished off the Thunder Selects with a resounding 77-48 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers to finish with a 2-1 record in the exhibition tournament.

After a tough loss to Acadia the day before, the Gaels bounced back nicely with a strong 77-48 win. Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) had 13 points while Alarie and Robyn Pearson (Toronto) each added 12 of their own.

Despite being down after the first quarter 17-14 the Gaels poured on the offence while shutting down the Tigers attack outscoring Dalhousie 42-16 over the next two quarters.

The Gaels shot 40.8% from the floor and capitalized on the 32 turnovers committed by Dalhousie in the game.

DAY 2: Queen's 52, Acadia 73

The Gaels were outmatched on the second day of the Thunder Selects holiday tournament as the Acadia Axewomen defeated Queen's 73-52.

Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) led all Gaels with 14 points while adding four rebounds and picking up four steals as well. Poor shooting caused Queen's to fall behind early sealing their fate in the loss to the Axewomen. Over the course of the game Queen's shot just 27.4% from the floor while Acadia was hitting shots at a 39.7% rate.

The Gaels will close out the tournament Friday against Dalhousie.

DAY 1: Queen's 55, Saint Mary's 47

Queen's opened the tournament with a game against another U Sports nationally ranked program in the Saint Mary's Huskies who are slotted at No.8 in Canada.

Emily Hazlett (Fredericton), who is the Gaels lone East coater, led the team with 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists as they took down the Huskies 55-47.

Saint Mary's and the Gaels are both the only teams in their respective conferences that are undefeated in league play with the Huskies posting a 7-0 record and the Gaels a 6-0 mark. Winnipeg, Alberta and UBC are all also undefeated from the Canada West Conference.

Queen's will take on Acadia in their second game of the tournament at 6pm Eastern Time. The game can be seen live online at www.austv.com.
