KINGSTON, Ont. (November 4, 2016) - With two extremely close sets, Queen's (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season 3-0 to Ryerson (1-2), 26-24, 25-23, and 25-18.
GAME FLOW
Queen's started the game well, with Veronica Wensley (Coquitlam, B.C.) picking up a service ace early in the match. After Ryerson went up 5-3 in the first set, the Gaels trailed until the final few points when it was tied up 24-24. The play was as even as the score reflected, with highlights for both teams. For Queen's,
Caroline Livingston (Kelowna, B.C.) earned a kill by hitting it past her sister, Veronica, who is in her fifth year at Ryerson. To end the set 26-24 in the Rams favour, Theanna Vernon connected perfectly on a quick middle set from Cate McIlmoyle.
The second set was just as close as the first, entering the technical timeout at 16-15 for Ryerson. Caroline continued to swing well for Queen's, collecting eight of her game-high 17 kills in the middle stanza. With the set still up for grabs in the late stages, Ryerson took advantage of a costly rotation errors by the Gaels to earn their first set point, before going up 2-0 on a 25-23 set win.
Errors cost the tricolour in the final set, committing 11 of their 19 attacking errors in the third. The Rams closed out the match with a 25-18 win.
On the scoresheet,
Caroline Livingston had a game-high 19 points with two service aces to go with her 17 points.
Isabelle Korchinski (Anmore, B.C.) also reached the double-digit mark with 11 kills for Queen's. Defensively, Caroline and setter
Sierra Hardy (Oakville, Ont.) led the team with nine digs.
For Ryerson, Julie Longman picked up 15 digs, while Becky Zeeman led all Rams scorers with 14 kills.
