Women's Water Polo NCWP Championship - Varsity Blues claim Inaugural NCWP Championship

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 25, 2016) - The Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the McMaster Marauders 12-2 on Sunday at the ARC Pool to claim the inaugural NCWP Championship.

CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY
Toronto 12, McMaster 2 (GOLD MEDAL GAME)
The Toronto Varsity Blues claimed the inaugural NCWP Championship with a convincing 12-2 win over the McMaster Marauders.

The Toronto team got off to a quick start with four goals in the opening period before Ana Miroslavic added another two giving the Varsity Blues a 6-0 lead. Another four goals from Toronto allowed them to take complete control of the game up 12-0 mid-way through the final period.

McMaster was able to get on the board with a goal from Jillian Stringer and another from goaltender Betty Spurgeon to make it 12-2. Spurgeon scored from half to the top corner of the Varsity Blue net with just four seconds left in the match, a great individual effort.

Seven different scorers found their way to the gamesheet for Toronto who were led by Megan MacCormac who potted three in the victory.

Queen's 11, Ottawa 8
The host Gaels defeated Ottawa 11-8 to close out the round robin for the NCWP bronze medal between Carleton, Queen's and Ottawa. With the Queen's win the Carleton Ravens claimed bronze with a 1-0-1 record against Ottawa and Queen's.

Queen's never trailed in the game opening up with 2-0 and 6-2 leads in the opening half. From there, the Gee-Gees scored four of the next five including two from Tara Hristov to close the gap to just 7-6.

Caitlin Neopole scored two big goals for the Gaels first putting them up 9-6 and then 11--8 in the fourth period to close out the win.

The Gaels finish the bronze medal round robin with a 1-1 record for fourth place while Ottawa takes fifth overall with an 0-1-1 record.

DAY 2
Carleton 9, Ottawa 9
The two Ottawa based school's battled out their first round robin game to a 9-9 draw. The Carleton Ravens had an incredible performance by Branka Travovik who scored all nine goals for Carleton.

The Ravens had a 2-0 lead after one and Travovik was up to four at half compared to two goals from the Ottawa team. A seven goal second half which saw two of Jane Douglas' three marks on the game propelled the Gee-Gees to a 9-9 draw. Carleton was down 9-8 but with just nine seconds remaining Travovik struck to even the score at 9-9.

Toronto 16, Queen's 7
A seven goal second period propelled the Varsity Blues to a 16-7 win over the host Queen's Gaels earning them a spot in Sunday's gold medal game against the McMaster Marauders who qualified on Friday night.

With a 4-2 lead after the opening frame Kassie Fraser scored three of her five goals in the second frame giving Toornto an 11-3 lead after the first half. Alexandra Kraft scored three of her six goals in the fourth and the Varsity Blues held on for the win.

Queen's was led once again by Vesselina Velikova who scored three times for the Gaels. The home team will now play in the round robin with Carleton and Ottawa to determine the bronze medal winner. 

Carleton 6, Queen's 3
The Gaels dropped their first game of the round robin for the bronze medal 6-3 to Carleton on Saturday afternoon.

The Ravens jumped ahead late in the third and stayed in front with a pair of goals in the fourth period en route to a 6-3 win. 

Carleton had a strong game from Branka Travovik who scored in all four periods of action. If the Gaels are able to defeat Ottawa on Sunday, Carleton will claim the bronze with a win and a tie.

DAY 1
Queen's 14, Ottawa 8
The Gaels saw an offensive surge early on lead them to a 14-8 win over Ottawa. Queen's scored four times in the first period and five times in the second to take a 9-2 lead at halftime.

From there the Gaels eased their way to a 14-8 decision. Simone Wright Stein and Vesselina Velikova combined for nine of the Gaels goals to lead the attack while four other Gaels also found the scoresheet. For Ottawa, Erin Woods lead the charge with four scores of her own.

Queen's will now take on Toronto on Saturday at 12:40pm while Ottawa will take on Carleton at 11:30am.

Carleton 2, McMaster 4
With a trip straight to the gold medal game on the line it was a close affair between the Ravens and Marauders.

Jorjan Brydges stepped up for the Marauders scoring three of their four goals in the 4-2 win. After Carleton had cut the lead to just 2-1 for McMaster, Brydges scored her third marker to make it 3-1 in the third. In the fourth frame the two sides traded goals and the Marauders booked their spot in the gold medal game Sunday.

Carleton will now take on Ottawa on Saturday at 11:30am.
