Kingston, Ont. (October 7, 2016) - The Gaels (3-2) beat York (3-2) 55-5 on Friday evening in a preview of next weekend's OUA playoff game on Nixon Field. The result gives Queen's home field advantage in next weekend's game, which will be played on Homecoming Saturday back on Nixon Field.Â
There was a slight delay to the start of the game because York forgot their jerseys. The visitors ended up wearing a set of old high school jerseys provided by Gaels head coach
Beth Barz.
GAME FLOW
Miranda Seifert (Regina) scored five tries on the day to lift the Gaels over the York Lions. Seifert punched in the first two tries of the game, taking the ball straight from the scrum into the try zone on the second score.
Pippi McKay (Toronto) scored the third try for the Gaels after
Kara Gani (Toronto) made a good run up the field, pushing over York defenders along the way. Next, it was
Sadie Stephenson (Oakville, Ont.) putting down a try for Queen's before Seifert scored her third of the day as the first half expired.
The second half started with more of the same from the Gaels, as Seifert put down another tricolour try 18 minutes into the frame. After
Lauren Murray (Lindsay, Ont.) scored a try from 10 yards out,
Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) hit her fifth and final conversion of the game. At 45-0 in favour of Queen's, it was finally York's turn to get on the board. Tobi Owotomo scored her league-leading 12th try of the season by dodging defenders and running in from 20 yards out. Seifert scored again before Holly MacDonald (Hastings, New Zealand) ended the game with another Gaels try to make the final score 55-5.

FINAL SAY
"We got the win we wanted, which means we get to host next weekend. From an alumni perspective it's nice to be home [on homecoming]. It's always easier to play at home. Look at this facility, it's absolutely beautiful, so we'd rather be here." -
