KINGSTON, Ont. (October 29, 2016) – The Queen's Gaels (5-2-1) defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks (3-4-1) in a shootout Saturday night at the Memorial Centre in OUA men's hockey action.
GAME FLOW
The first period was action-packed, with goals in both ends of the rink. Queen's opened the scoring two minutes in on a power play.
Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) scored on a one-timer shot, after receiving a slick behind the back pass from
Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.).
Francesco Vilardi (Kingston, Ont.) picked up the second assist. One minute later,
Ted Hunt (Toronto, Ont.) scored for the Gaels on a deflection off a Golden Hawk from the point.
Patrick Downe (New Maryland, N.B.) and
Dylan Anderson (Greely, Ont.) picked up the assists.
The Golden Hawks responded with a goal in the fifth minute by Neil Aird. Will Cook and Nick Tetley assisted on the play. The Gaels then picked up another power play goal.
Warren Steele (Williamsburg, Ont.) hammered a one-timer slap shot scoring for the Gaels,
Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) and
Francesco Vilardi (Kingston, Ont.) picked up the assists. The last goal of the period came from the Golden Hawks. Erik Pushka scored, with Kyle Morrison and Luke Hietkamp assisting. The Gaels finished the period with a 3-2 lead.
In the second period, the Golden Hawks tied the game on a shorthanded breakaway. Andrew Fritsch picked up the unassisted goal. After a number of chances in both ends, this proved to be the only goal, leaving the game tied 3-3 at the end of the period.
The third period also remained scoreless, forcing the game into a 4-on-4 overtime period. In overtime, both teams had a number of chances, but could not get on the board. The game then went into a 3-on-3 double overtime. In double overtime, neither team found the back of the net, forcing the game into a shootout.
In the shootout,
Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) and
Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) scored for the Gaels, to defeat the Golden Hawks. After Brennan stopped both Golden Hawks shooters Abraham broke in knowing if he scored he'd win the game. A fake to the left and deke to his backhand allowed enough space to sneak the puck by the outstretched leg of Furlong.
