Men's basketball hosts Queen's Invitational - Gaels finish weekend 1-2 with loss to Ottawa

Kingston, Ont. (October 14, 2016) - The Gaels men's basketball team plays host to Memorial, Alberta, and Ottawa at their annual Queen's Invitational tournament this weekend at the ARC.

Queen's 60 Ottawa 64
The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team ended its Invitational Tournament with a 64-60 defeat to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday afternoon at the ARC. Queen's finishes the weekend with a 1-2 record after falling to Alberta on Saturday evening and topping Memorial on Friday.

Tanner Graham (Kingston) recorded a team-best 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while brother Jesse added 10 points and six rebounds for the Gaels. Harry Range tallied 12 points and three boards off the bench, and the Gaels shot 45.3% as a team, but gave up 17 second-chance points while accumulating six of their own.

The Gee-Gees feasted off the hosts 16 turnovers, turning those into 18 points, and outrebounded the Gaels 40-32. Caleb Agada led all players with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double. Brody Maracle chipped in 14 points and eight boards in helping Ottawa sweep the weekend invitational.

Alberta 90 Memorial 62
The Alberta Golden Bears ended their weekend at the Queen's Invitational with two-straight wins, capped off by a 90-62 victory over the Memorial Seahawks on Sunday afternoon at the ARC.

Geoff Pippus tallied a game-high 16 points, shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc, and Andre Kelly added 15 points and four rebounds for the Golden Bears, who shot 46.8% from the field and 46.9% overall from three-point distance. Brody Clarke tallied 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds, as Alberta brought down 47 rebounds, 20 more than their counterparts from the AUS

Memorial's top scorer was Vasilije Curcic who accumulated 13 points and five rebounds. Nathan Barker added with points and four boards for the Seahawks, who managed a 41.3% shooting efficiency and 24 bench points, compared to 47 from the Golden Bears.

Saturday
Alberta 73 Queen's 65
The Queen's Gaels dropped a 73-65 decision to the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday evening at the ARC to close out the second day of competition at the Queen's Invitational.

Mamadou Gueye led all players with 21 points on Saturday, shooting 7-of-16 from the floor and adding a game-high nine rebounds for the Golden Bears, who bounced back from an opening weekend loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday. Brody Clarke added 19 points and eight boards, and Alberta shot 39.4% (26-66) as a team and narrowly won the glass battle, picking up 40 rebounds compared to 38 from Queen's.

Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) and Tanner Graham (Kingston, Ont.) topped the Gaels scoring with 18 and 17 points respectively. Singh led Queen's with eight rebounds. The invitational hosts were 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the field and 7-of-28 (25.0%) from beyond the arc. Queen's drops to 1-1 after having defeated Memorial on Friday night.

The Gaels close out the weekend against Ottawa Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. Alberta will take on Memorial at 12:00 looking for their second consecutive victory.

Memorial 47 Ottawa 84
The Ottawa Gee-Gees recorded its second consecutive victory of the weekend at the Queen's Invitational, topping the Memorial Seahawks 84-47 on Saturday afternoon at the ARC.

The Gee-Gees used a balanced attack to tally the win, which was led by a 14-point performance from Jean Emmanuel Pierre-Charles who shot 7-of-10 from the field. Brody Maracle added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Calvin Epistola notched four three-pointer jumpers for 12 points.

Ottawa shot 47.2% as a team, compared to 32.1% from the Seahawks. Vasilije Curcic led all players with 25 points, scoring more than half of his team's points, and Daniel Gordon added six points and three rebounds off the bench in a losing cause for Memorial.

Memorial closes out the weekend on Sunday with a noon tip-off against the Alberta Golden Bears. Ottawa will look to sweep the weekend with a third victory against the host Queen's Gaels on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Friday
Ottawa 73 Alberta 63
In the men's tournament opener, the Ottawa Gee-Gees used an 18-point performance from Caleb Agada to defeat the Alberta Golden Bears 73-63 at the ARC on Friday afternoon. Adaga shot 6-of-14 from the field, while posting a team-high eight rebounds to go along with four assists and five steals.

Jean Emmanuel Pierre-Charles added 16 points on 50% shooting and also pulled down eight boards, while Brody Maracle added 15 points and four rebounds for the Gee-Gees, who worked at a 47.5% (28-59) efficiency from the field.

The Golden Bears were 19-of-51 (37.3%) overall on Friday, and were led by a 13-point performance by Austin Waddoups. Andre Kelly picked up 12 points, the highest amongst all bench players, and Mamadou Gueye added 10 points to round out Alberta's double-digit scorers.

The Gee-Gees take on Memorial Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., while the Golden Bears do battle with the host Queen's on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.

Queen's 87 Memorial 63
The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team picked up a victory on the final game of the opening day at the Tindall Invitational, downing the Memorial Seahawks 87-63 on Friday evening at the ARC.

The Gaels were led by Sukhpreet Singh who drained a game-high 19 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field and going a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Singh also picked up a team-best five assists and three take-aways, while Richard Iheadindu and Tanner Graham dropped 16 and 15 points respectively. Queen's shot an impressive  54.0% (34-63) as a team on Friday, compared to 43.1% (25-58) from the Seahawks.

Memorial was topped by Davion Parnsalu and Vasilije Curcic who recorded 12 points apiece in a losing cause for the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) representatives. The Seahawks turned over the ball 22 times, compared to 13 from the host Gaels.

Queen's will look for their second win in as many days on Saturday night when they take on Alberta at 8:00 p.m. Memorial will try for their first win of the weekend against the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
