The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch the Gaels in action at home, or how to follow them on the road.
WOMEN'S RUGBY
Need to Know: No.4 Ranked team in CIS, only night home game of the season with a 7pm start, Gaels will host CIS Championship Nov.5-8 at Nixon, Gabriel Pizza will be giving away coupons for $3 off a large pizza at the game
Chown has scored a try
in both games this season. The No.4 Queen's Gaels (2-0) will play host to an Old Four rival the Toronto Varsity Blues (0-2) in the Queen's Athletics Game of the Week on Saturday night at Nixon Field with kick-off set for 7pm. The Gaels are well positioned to finish as the top seed in the Russell division as they host Toronto in their third of five regular season games. Right now Queen's sits second in their division just a point behind York who the Gaels will meet on October 2 in Toronto. The Gaels enter play this weekend coming off a 54-0 shutout win over Trent on Saturday. Queen's wasted no time jumping ahead of Trent as
Lauren Cranfield (Pickering, Ont.) scored the opening try just a minute into the match, a number of first-year players managed to see significant playing time as well for the Gaels.
Toronto enters play still looking for their first win of the season and have surrendered the most points against in the Russell division having given up 131 over two games compared to Queen's who has only given up 14 in two games. After losing to Laurier 51-17 in their opening game Toronto lost to York 80-0 last week at home.
A player to watch for the Gaels this weekend is Emma Chown (Barrie, Ont.).She leads the Gaels in scoring this season with three tries for 15 points which ranks her 10th (tie) in the OUA this season. In the Gaels season opening win over McMaster she scored twice and then added one score against Trent last weekend.
FOOTBALL
The Queen's Gaels (2-2) continue their road trip as they visit their Old Four rivals the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-2) on Saturday afternoon at 1pm. Queen's is coming off of a week 4 loss at Western 48-25 where quarterback
Nate Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont.) threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another 62 yards. At 2-2 Queen's is still in the thick of the playoff race and the game against Toronto will play a big factor as the Varsity Blues sit just behind the Gaels in the standings. Gaels running back
Jesse Andrews (Arnprior, Ont.) continues to excel for Queen's in the backfield as he leads the nation in rushing yards with 583 and his four touchdowns place him fifth in the CIS as well.
Toronto enters the weekend at 1-2 and are coming off of a close 19-15 loss to the Carleton Ravens, a team the Gaels defeated in week 1. Toronto got their only win of the season in week 2 when they defeated Windsor 8-7 at home. Queen's will look to take advantage of a Toronto offence that has scored just 56 points in three games this season while allowing 81.
Queen's enters Saturday's game having won 19 straight against their longtime rivals and have not lost to Toronto since October 4, 1975.
MEN'S RUGBYThe men's rugby team takes a 2-1 record on the road to face their cross-town rivals the RMC Paladins (0-2) this Saturday afternoon at 1pm in Kingston. Last week the Gaels were on the road as well in Waterloo and came away with an impressive 76-14 win over the Warriors.
Benjamin Oppenheimer (Ottawa) led the way for the Gaels putting down three tries in the win.
RMC has been off since September 12 when they last took the field losing out to Guelph 32-8 in Kingston, a team that also defeated Queen's.
WOMEN'S SOCCERAfter coming back from Toronto with a pair of wins last weekend the Gaels women's soccer team (3-1-3) returns home to begin a five game homestand. They start off with a pair of games this weekend when they host UOIT on Saturday and Trent on Sunday with both games starting at 1pm at Miklas McCarney Field. Queen's enters the weekend having won three straight contests, all of which were road victories. Last weekend they were in Toronto and after defeating the Varsity Blues 1-0 they then kept the offence rolling against Ryerson notching three goals for a shutout of the Rams 3-0.
Gaels rookie striker
Jenny Wolever (Toronto) had a pair of goals for Queen's in their win against Ryerson and the first-year now has a total of four on the season.
UOIT comes to Queen's holding a 3-2 record while Trent is still winless on the season sitting at 0-5.
MEN'S SOCCERComing off a 2-0 weekend in Toronto that included a 4-1 thumping of the then-No.2 Ryerson Rams, the Gaels (3-1-2) welcome UOIT (3-2-1) and Trent (0-5-1) to Miklas McCarney field on Saturday and Sunday with both games starting up at 3:15pm. The accolades were aplenty for striker
Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa) after a big weekend for Queen's.
Schroeter tallied a goal in each of the Gaels two games over the weekend helping secure six points in the standings. For his efforts he was named not only the OUA male athlete of the week but also received CIS recognition as well as the top male athlete. Queen's has won three straight games and will look to keep their win streak alive this weekend against a pair of teams that are below them in the standings.
