KINGSTON, Ont. (February 17, 2015) - The Queen's Gaels and No.6 McGill will meet for the fourth time in their playoff history as Queen's looks to beat their Old Four counterparts and knot the all-time series record at 2-2.
Playoff Dates:Wed Feb 18 @ McGill 7:00pm WEBCASTFri Feb 20 @ Queen's 7:30pm WEBCAST | TICKETSSun Feb 22 @ McGill 7:00pm WEBCASTHow they got here:The Gaels are fresh off a series deciding overtime victory against the Laurentian Voyageurs where
Kelly Jackson (Scarborough, Ont.) scored at the 3:06 mark of the first overtime period to clinch the win and
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) backstopped the Gaels with 35 saves in the 2-1 win. The series win for the Gaels comes after dropping their first game of the series at home forcing the Gaels to win back-to-back games in Sudbury. For Queen's they enacted a bit of revenge on Laurentian who are in their second season in the OUA after a 13 year hiatus. Their last playoff meeting was in 1972-73 where it was Laurentian advancing past the first round with a 5-4 overtime win.
"We knew we wanted a better second half and if we peaked at the right time no one would want to play us in the playoffs," said Jackson on Tuesday afternoon at practice. "Even losing that first game (to Laurentian) and facing a bit more adversity only made us stronger and I think our confidence is sky high right now."Â
The top-seeded McGill team was able to make a comeback of their own after being surprised by the eighth seed Concordia in game 1 where the Stingers went into McConnell Arena and stole a 6-4 victory. The high flying Redmen bounced back to take the final two games outscoring Concordia 11-3 in the process.
Gaels rookies leading the way:The Gaels have been given a youthful jolt this season thanks to a number of rookies who have made an impact for the Tricolour. On defence, Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) finished as the team leader in scoring and tied for the OUA lead in points for defencemen finishing second in the rookie scoring race.A pair of former Kingston Frontenacs Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) and Warren Steele (Williamsburg, Ont.) joined the Gaels this season and have both seen immediate success in the OUA. Greenaway led the Gaels in scoring with 16 goals on the season, a mark that topped all rookies in the conference, while Steele logged top minutes on defence and finished with 15 points to break the top 20 amongst rookies.Along with Greenaway up front Queen's had a strong contribution from Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) who finished with 10 goals and nine assists good for eighth amongst all OUA rookies.
Bailie holding down the fort:The reigning CIS Rookie of the Year, OUA MVP and Top Goalie Bailie had a strong season and continued his stellar play between the pipes in the playoffs for Queen's. In the opening round Bailie finished with a 1.32 GAA and 0.958 save percentage both second best in the playoffs so far.
The Gaels goalie will face a high-powered McGill offence that finished with over 100 goals for in the regular season and see both Jonathan Brunelle and Cedric McNicoll tied for the playoff lead in scoring with two goals and six assists apiece. Head-to-head:2014-15Queen's - 13-12-1, 5th place in OUA East
