Gaels win home opener 64-47 over the York Lions

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 7, 2015) – The Queen's Gaels (1-0) opened up their 2015-16 season with a 64-47 victory at home against the York Lions (0-1) at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.

GAME FLOW
The Gaels got off to a great start to their 2015-16 regular season Saturday evening in the main gym of the ARC defeating the visiting Lions by 15 points.

Queen's came out quick on the Lions as they put up 17 points in the first quarter. Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaels offence as she netted five of her 15 points in the first frame. On the defensive side of the ball, Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) took down four of her five rebounds in the first quarter. Queen's defence only allowed 10 points against during the opening quarter.

The second quarter action was very similar to the first as Queen's outscored the Lions 16-11, which gave the Gaels a 13 point lead heading into halftime. Queen's post Robyn Pearson (Toronto) pulled down 10 of her team-high 13 rebounds during the second quarter. The Gaels received a good contribution from their bench which put up seven of the team total of 16.

In the second half the visiting York Lions came out with a better offensive effort but still weren't able to sustain any comeback chance. They were only outscored by three and two points respectively during the final two quarters. The Lions were hurt by their poor free throw shooting throughout the game as they shot 47%. York's 23 team turnovers compared to Queen's 13 also played a major part in the outcome of the opening game of the season.

Overall it was a great effort from the Gaels in their season and home opener agaisnt York. Both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball for Queen's made timely plays which ultimately lead to a Gaels victory.
