GUELPH (November 1, 2015) - Queen's (6-1-1) played a second of their back-to-back weekend games on the road, taking on the Guelph Gryphons, falling 4-1.
Game FlowAfter a big win Saturday afternoon versus Waterloo, the Women's Team looked to keep their hot streak going against a strong Guelph roster. The teams came into the game sitting as the top two teams in the OUA standings.
The opening period saw each team with their own chances, but it was a late powerplay by Guelph that gave them a chance to open the scoring. Averi Nooren put away her third goal of the season to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.
Only 3:33 into the second Nooren was able to beat the Gaels defense and goaltender
Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) to give the home team an insurance marker, going up 2-0. The Gaels were then able to convert with a late powerplay marker of their own in this period.
Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) converted with her third of the season and cut the deficit to one.
Taking the lead in shots on goal, Queens was unable to solve goaltender Valerie Lamenta the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Guelph scored an early third period goal, followed by an empty-netter by Averi Nooren, earning her a hat-trick on the afternoon. Despite only three penalties all game, each team was able to convert one marker with the man advantage. The Gaels end up dropping their first regulation loss of the season.
