The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action at home, or how to follow them on the road.GAMES OF THE WEEKWomen's BasketballThis weekend the Gaels (4-3) enter the second half of their 2014-15 season by hosting the Nipissing Lakers (0-6) on Friday at 6pm and the Laurentian Voyageurs (3-4) Saturday at 6pm in the ARC main gym. Over the break Queen's participated in the Concordia-Reebok Invitational Tournament where they finished 1-2 with a win over Bishops 64-56 and two losses against Concordia (66-47) and McMaster (75-45). At the tournament the Gaels were led by Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) who was top scorer in two of the three games, finishing with a total of 47 for Queen's. The Gaels haven't seen either of this weekend's opponents yet this season but they will be gearing up to continue their two game winning streak started prior to the break with wins over York and Algoma. It is also the annual "Shoot for the Cure" game, for more information on this initiative click here.Men's BasketballThis weekend the Gaels (2-5) kick off the second half of their 2014-15 season by hosting the Nipissing Lakers (0-6) on Friday at 8pm and the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-5) Saturday at 8pm in the ARC main gym. Queen's faced Nipissing earlier this season in an exhibition tournament and managed to overtake the Lakers 83-81 in a close game. So far this season Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) ranks second in the CIS averaging 25.3 points per game.  This is an important weekend for the Gaels as they will attempt to continue their two game winning streak that was started prior to the break with wins over York and Algoma, a stretch that saw Faulkner honoured as the OUA Athlete of the Week. The game on Saturday against Laurentian marks the annual Marco W. Alessio Memorial Game named in memory of Marco William Alessio, a former Gaels basketball player from 1987 to 1989. Mark became a teacher following his time at Queen's and he travelled the world, teaching in locations such as Hong Kong, Mexico, Spain and Madagascar. It was in Madagascar that Mark lost his life on February 23, 2009 at the age of 43 during a time of political upheaval in the African nation. To honour Mark and to recognize how important Queen's and the basketball team were to him, a scholarship was established during the 2009-10 season in his memory. This year's recipient will be announced prior to the game on Saturday.
Women's VolleyballKicking off the second half of their 2014-15 season, the Gaels (8-3) host the Nipissing Lakers (3-7) on Saturday at 1pm and the York Lions (5-5) on Sunday at 1pm in the ARC main gym. Queen's is on a five game winning streak after defeating both York and Nipissing in three set sweeps prior to the break. For the Gaels, Niki Slikboer (Seagrave, Ont.) was a powerhouse not only her attack but also on defence. Slikboer currently ranks second in the CIS with 23 solo blocks credited to her while the team as a whole ranks 11th with 42 solo blocks.  Men's VolleyballKicking off the second half of their 2014-15 season, the Gaels (6-4) host the Nipissing Lakers (2-8) on Saturday at 3pm and the York Lions (6-4) on Sunday at 3pm in the ARC main gym.  Queen's was in Florida to kick-start the 2015 calendar where they competed in the Alden Cup exhibition volleyball tournament, finishing with a 1-3 record. The Gaels are on a two game winning streak after defeating both York and Nipissing 3-1 prior to the break. During these games Queen's saw strong attacking performances from Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) and Philippe Goyer (Ottawa) who will look to stay hot and start the OUA playoff drive off right.Â
Men's HockeyThis weekend the Gaels (8-8-1) hit the road as they take on York (6-10-1) on Friday at 7pm in Toronto and Brock (8-8-1) on Saturday at 7:15pm in St.Catherines. Queen's started the second half of their 2014-15 season last weekend with a 4-3 loss at Nipissing and a 2-1 loss against Carleton. The Gaels were leading the Lakers 3-1 in the second period but Nipissing came back in the third frame with three unanswered goals of their own as they went on to earn the 4-3 victory. Carleton took a 2-0 early lead but
Kelly Jackson (Scarborough, Ont.) managed to get the puck in the net to keep the Gaels in the game. Despite a strong third period and several quality scoring opportunities, Queen's was unable to find the equalizer in the 2-1 loss to the Ravens. Prior to the game against Carleton, second year goaltender
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) was honoured with the Murray Douglas Scholarship created to recognize the academic and athletic excellence of a varsity hockey player at Queen's University.

Women's HockeyThis weekend the No.5 Gaels (10-2-2) hit the road as they take on Ryerson (6-7-0) on Friday at 7:30pm and Toronto (8-3-2) Saturday at 7:30pm. To start the New Year Queen's participated in the Theresa Humes exhibition tournament in Montreal finishing with an 0-2-1 record. The Gaels dropped their first game of the tournament falling 7-3 versus Team Quebec and were stopped once again with a 4-1 loss against the Western Mustangs. In their final game, the Gaels were able to push the host, the Concordia Stingers, to a shootout but the Gaels could not seal the victory and lost 4-3. Queen's sits in a good position for their upcoming games as they defeated both of this weekend's opponents earlier in the season.
