LONDON, Ont. (September 26, 2014) - The men's hockey team lost their second game in as many days at the Western Invitational, being defeated 3-2 in overtime by the Waterloo Warriors after falling 5-1 to the host Mustangs in preseason action.
Day 2: Queen's vs Waterloo
Patrick Downe's (New Maryland, N.B.) two goals weren't enough for Queen's, as the second day at the Western Invitational ended in a 3-2 overtime loss to Waterloo.
After a scoreless first frame in which the Gaels fended off three Waterloo power play opportunities, Queen's was able to grab the lead when Downe (New Maryland, N.B.) opened the scoring. Rookies Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) and Geordie Maguire (Winnipeg) registered assists on Downe's first tally of the preseason.
The Gaels could not defend their lead as Waterloo responded with two unanswered goals from Mitch Elliot and Riley Sonnenburg, giving the Warriors the advantage heading into the final minutes of play. Queen's knotted the score with less than three minutes remaining in the third, when Downe deposited an unassisted power play goal for his second of the night.
An overtime penalty cost the Gaels the victory as Waterloo's Stephan Silas buried the team's first power play goal of the game to earn the 3-2 win. Queen's goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) started in net for the second consecutive night, surrendering three all three goals in the game.
The Gaels return to action next Saturday when they travel to Hamilton, New York to battle Colgate University in their next exhibition match.
Day 1: Queen's vs Western
The men's hockey team dropped their first game of the Western Invitational 5-1 versus the tournament host Western Mustangs.
The Gaels could not capitalize on two early power play opportunities in the first frame that included a lengthy five on three man advantage. Western was able to grab the lead on their first power play of the game, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.
It did not take long for Western to add to their lead as they found the back of the net two minutes into the second period of play. The Gaels reduced the deficit to one after Tyler Moore (Winnipeg) deposited his first goal of the preseason on the power play, with Corey Bureau (Amherstview, Ont.) picking up the only assist. The Mustangs regained their momentum when Trevor Warnaar registered back-to-back tallies to put Western ahead 4-1 in the final minutes of the second period.
The Gaels continued to struggle at both ends of the ice as Western added another goal in the third to secure the 5-1 victory. Goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) started in net for the Gaels, surrendering all five goals over the outing.
