TORONTO (September 21, 2014) - The No. 8 Gaels suffered their second consecutive loss after being defeated 2-1 by Toronto Sunday afternoon on the road.
The Gaels entered Sunday's match looking to earn a victory one day after suffering their first loss of the season. The game began as a back and forth affair with both squads sustaining offensive pressure at different points in time. Toronto began to control the pace of play as the match progressed, pressuring the Gaels defensive unit and breaking through in the 31st minute on a strike by Kilian Elkinson. It did not take long for the Varsity Blues to register another tally as Nikolay Saveliev pounced on a loose ball in the Gaels box and deposited it to the back of the net, giving Toronto a 2-0 lead heading into the second half of play.Â
The Gaels began to gain momentum early in the second half as they looked to bury their first goal of the game. Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa) had a fantastic scoring opportunity after intercepting an attempted clearance by Toronto keeper Mark Rogal. Schroeter could not convert as Rogal recovered to make the save. The Gaels were able to cut the lead in half in the 86th minute as Eric Koskins (Richmond Hill, Ont.) floated a header over Toronto's keeper and into the back of the net, deflecting off a Varsity Blues defender for an own goal. Queen's looked to quickly add another to tie the score, but could not generate further scoring opportunities.Â
During injury time, Queen's captain Chris Michael was penalized with a straight red card for a late challenge and will miss the team's next game as a result.Â
The Gaels (5-2-1) will look to put an end to their current losing streak when they return to action next Saturday to take on UOIT (1-4-3) in Oshawa, Ontario.
