OTTAWA (March 2, 2014) - The Gaels men's hockey team was eliminated after losing 2-0 to the No. 5 Carleton Ravens in the third game of their best-of-three OUA semifinal series in Ottawa on Sunday night.
It was a goaltending battle all night long in Ottawa as
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) and Francis Dupuis got the nods for their respective teams.
The Gaels started out with a few good scoring opportunities in the period but could not get anything past Dupuis. They also got the first powerplay and
Tyler Moore (Winnipeg) had the best chance for Queen's in the period with a backhand that Dupuis just got enough of to steer wide. Carleton got their own powerplay late in the period but Bailie turned aside all 13 shots faced in the period.
In the second the two teams each had a pair of powerplay opportunities but it was much of the same result as both goaltenders were sharp. Bailie cleared aside another 12 shots while Dupuis stopped all eight on goal in the period.
The third period finally provided the first goal of the game and it was the by the Ravens. A great individual effort by MItch Porowski was rewarded with a goal. Porowski deked through a Gaels defender and fired a shot high over the shoulder of Bailie. The goal came only 1:38 into the period.
The Gaels had their chances to even the score with two additional powerplay chances coming their way. Dupuis and the Carleton defence shut down the Gaels however to keep a 1-0 lead late in the game.
With the Queen's net empty the Ravens Corey Durocher iced the game and the series with an empty-net goal to give Carleton a 2-0 win.
Bailie finished with 38 saves in the loss while Dupuis stopped all 27 fired at him for the shutout.
Carleton now advances to the OUA East final where they will meet the McGill Redmen.
