Gaels Beat Toronto 77-75 In Fourth Quarter Comeback

| By:
BOX SCORE TORONTO (February 14, 2014) - The Queen's men's basketball team (10-11) won 77-75 against the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-17) in a nail biting finish Friday night.

Queen's came out in the first quarter on fire, hitting from long range and going into the second quarter leading 21-12. By the end of the second, the offensive accuracy dwindled for both teams as Queen's and Toronto combined for 23 turnovers. Nikola Misljencevic (Ottawa) was the spark for the Gaels, knocking down shots when nothing else was falling. Although it was not the prettiest, the Gaels still led the Varsity Blues by five going into the half.

Queen's really struggled from the free throw line, shooting only 52% for the game. Toronto cashed in on the struggles the Gaels were facing, and tied the game up 58-58 early in the fourth quarter. With a bunch of and one plays in the fourth by Toronto's Alex Hill and Dylan Churchill, it looked like Queen's was not going to be able to come out of the hole they dug themselves.

With just under two minutes left, the Gaels trailed by 10. Despite the deficit, the Gaels came together with great communication and effective offensive and defensive possessions, stringing together a 13-1 run. A transition three by Roshane Roberts (Vaughan, Ont.), a finger-roll finish by Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) and two made free-throws by Ryall Stroud  (Toronto) brought the Gaels back into the lead. The Varisty Blues could not respond in time.

Misljencevic led the Gaels with 18 points, going 5-7 from three point land. Roberts, Mackenzie Simpson (Ottawa) and Stroud added 13 a piece. Alex Hill of Toronto led all scorers with 35 points and his teammate Dylan Churchill contributed 18.

The men take on the No. 8-ranked Ryerson Rams in their last regular season game on Saturday at 8pm.
