Queen's gets four set win over York in Toronto

TORONTO (November 29, 2014) - The Queen's men's volleyball team (5-4) took a four set victory on the road over the York Lions (5-4) in Toronto on Saturday afternoon with set scores of 25-21, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-15.

Jamie Wright (Kingston, Ont.) served a solid game for the Gaels finishing with 45 assists in the win while five separate Gaels finished with double-digits in points. Ray Szeto was a bright spot for the Lions in the loss with 13 kills.

Queen's opened up a comfortable lead in the opening set as back-to-back kills from Philippe Goyer (Ottawa) gave Queen's a 12-7 lead. Queen's held their advantage throughout the set and Markus Trence (Orangeville, Ont.) finished off the opening frame with a kill from Wright 25-21.

The second set was close in the early going with York matching the Gaels attack and pulling ahead at one point to lead 11-10. The Gaels responded with eight of the next 12 points to lead 19-14, a run that was finished off with kills from Joraver Sangha (Brampton, Ont.) and Goyer. Once again it was Trence coming through in the clutch to finish the set with a kill and give the Gaels a decisive 2-0 set advantage.

The fourth set saw neither team lead by more than three and was tied at 22-22 after Trence put down a kill from Wright. York rallied to take three of the next four points and grab their first set win 25-22 forcing a fourth.

Queen's came out flying in the opening of the fourth, largely in part to errors committed by the Lions. Queen's had a run of seven points which included three errors from York to move ahead 8-2. The Gaels continued to roll finding themselves up 20-11 after Goyer threw down two kills for Queen's. Dylan Hunt (Aurora, Ont.) closed out the set and the match with a service ace for the 25-15 set and 3-1 match victory.

The Gaels continue their weekend road trip as they visit Nipissing tomorrow afternoon at 2pm to close out their first semester schedule.
