Gaels defeat Nipissing 3-1

NORTH BAY, Ont. (November 30, 2014) - The Queen's Gaels (6-4) took down the Nipissing Lakers (2-8) in four sets 3-1 in OUA men's volleyball action on Sunday afternoon. Set scores finished 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-19 for Queen's.

Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) and Philippe Goyer (Ottawa) combined for 31 points to lead the Gaels offensively in the victory while Ivo Dramov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) was strong defensively for Queen's with a game high of 20 digs. The Lakers Cameron Branch had a strong game in the loss finishing with 21 kills for Nipissing.

After finding themselves down 10-7 in the opening set, the Gaels battled back and took eight of the next 10 points to flip the script and take the lead 15-12. Tomlinson contributed on three of the points netting two of his kills and adding a block. Nipissing made it interesting near the end, evening the score at 23-23 but the Gaels finished off the set with a kill from Goyer and the 25-23 win.

Queen's climbed back in the second set, trailing by only one at 18-17, but errors put the Lakers in control as they took the set 25-22.

A Goyer kill put the Gaels up 16-13 in set three. Much like the second set, errors played a factor in the scoring but this time it was Nipissing who committed errors on the final four Gaels points to give Queen's the 25-21 set win.

Queen's closed out the match taking the final set 25-19. The Gaels put up five straight points to take the lead at the technical timeout 16-9 and took the set after back-to-back errors from the Lakers.

The Gaels are back in action on January 10 when they host Nipissing at the ARC.
