The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action at home, or how to follow them on the road.
GAMES OF THE WEEKWomen's BasketballThis week the Gaels (2-3) host the York Lions (0-5) on Wednesday at 6pm and Algoma (0-5) on Friday at 6pm in the ARC main gym. On the road last weekend, Queen's came out triumphant on Friday over Guelph (65-55) and fell to Brock (73-64) on Saturday. Against the Gryphons the Gaels were consistent in outscoring them in the first three quarters.  In the final frame, the Gryphons pulled out all the stops to try and reel in the Gaels lead outscoring them 23-15 but were could not come back from their deficit leaving the final score at 65-55 for Queen's. On Saturday it was a different story, in the first half the teams were evenly matched with the Badgers pulling ahead 32-31 at halftime. In the third quarter Brock managed to hit a 12-0 run giving them a comfortable 10-point lead they maintained over the Gaels to take the victory 73-64. Despite Queen's loss, against the Badgers Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) had a double-double performance scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Hazlett is currently tied for 10th place in the CIS with a three-pointer shooting percentage of 50.0 making seven out of her 14 attempts so far this season. This is the Gaels final two games before the winter break.Men's BasketballÂ
Faulkner is 2nd in CIS
averaging 25.6 PPGThis week the Gaels (0-5) host York (2-3) on Wednesday at 8pm and Algoma (0-5) on Friday at 8pm in the ARC main gym. On the road last weekend Queen's faced two tough losses against Guelph (63-56) and Brock in overtime (98-89). On Friday it was close from the tip-off, with the Gaels grabbing an early lead over the Gryphons putting them up 42-25 at the half.  Guelph came back in the second half with a renewed momentum, outscoring the Gaels to take the lead in the final minutes of the game. On Saturday, Queen's challenged the Badgers with a clutch jump shot from
Cy Samuels (Vaughan, Ont.) late in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 79-79 pushing the game into overtime.  The Gaels opened up overtime with a quick lead, but Brock was quick to regain it and pull away putting away a 98-89 win by the end of extra time.Â
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) had a strong weekend for Queen's, scoring a whopping 58 points and grabbing 29 rebounds from both games. Currently, Faulkner is ranked 2nd in the CIS averaging 25.6 points per game so far this season for the Gaels. Queen's is gearing up for their final weekend before the winter break.Â
No.6 Women's HockeyIn their final weekend of play before the winter break the women's hockey team has a tough challenge at home ahead of them. The No.6 Gaels (8-2-2) host the Windsor Lancers (8-2-2) on Saturday at 3:30pm and the No.4 Western Mustangs (11-0-1) on Sunday at 2:30pm at the Memorial Centre. There could be a lot of movement in the CIS Top 10 amongst these OUA schools depending on the results of these two games. On the road last weekend, Queen's came out with an overtime win against Laurier (5-4) but fell to Waterloo on Sunday afternoon (2-1). On Saturday the Gaels took the lead in the final frame but Laurier capitalized on power-play to tie up the game 4-4 forcing overtime.  Queen's sealed the victory in the final minute of the overtime period as Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.) deposited the Gaels second power-play goal of the night. On Sunday a single goal from Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) was not enough to defeat the Warriors as they beat Queen's 2-1 despite the Gaels outshooting Waterloo 28-25.  Pilon is ranked seventh in the CIS with a total of 15 points for the Gaels, so far this season she has scored seven goals, three game-winning goals and eight assists.   Men's HockeyMen's hockey welcomes a pair or northern schools to Kingston as the Gaels (7-5-1) host Nipissing (8-6-1) on Friday at 7:30pm and Laurentian (8-5-2) on Saturday at 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre. Last weekend the Gaels played on back-to-back nights against Lakehead coming out with a win (6-0) on Friday and an overtime loss (7-6) on Saturday.  On Friday the game opened with a quiet first period as neither team was able to find the back of the net but Queen's
Andrew Wiebe (Thunder Bay, Ont.) turned up the heat to score the first of five goals against the Thunderwolves in the second period.Â
Tyler Moore (Winnipeg) added to the final score in the third period to make it 6-0 for the Gaels and
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) finished the game off with his first shutout of the season with 22 saves. On Saturday the Thunderwolves came out with a renewed determination as they matched all of Queen's goals in the first period to tie it up 4-4. Neither teams could find the back of the net in the second period but again in the final frames the teams matched the scoring up forcing the game to overtime. It all came to an end when Cody Kostecki from the Thunderwolves scored the game-winning goal.Â
Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) came away from the weekend as the top scorer for the Gaels with three goals, one on Friday and two on Saturday. Currently,
Spencer Abraham (Campbelleville, Ont.) ranks ninth in the CIS with 14 assists for Queen's and 27
th overall with 17 points. The Gaels are heading into their final weekend of OUA play before the winter break.
Women's VolleyballÂ
Slikboer is 5th in CIS
with 17 solo blocksHeading into their final weekend of OUA play before the winter break, the Gaels (6-3) hit the road as they play York (4-4) on Saturday at 12pm and Nipissing (3-5) on Sunday at 12pm as they look to extend their three game win streak. Last weekend the Gaels came out on top with two back-to-back three set sweeps against Lakehead and Brock. On Friday, the Thunderwolves were no match for Queen's attack led by Niki Slikboer (Seagrave, Ont.) and Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.). Slikboer finished the night off with eight kills and one serving ace while Brett finished with a double-double of 12 kills and 12 digs. On Saturday it was a similar story, as Slikboer lead all players with a total of 14 points from seven kills, seven blocks and a serving ace. The Gaels dominated against the Badgers as they were both unprepared for the Queen's attack and unable to penetrate the Gaels defence.  Queen's ranks fourth in the CIS with 17.19 digs per set and on defence Slikboer is tied for fifth in the CIS with a total of 17 solo blocks so far this season. Men's VolleyballThe Gaels (4-4) wrap up the fall half of their season as they hit the road to play York (5-3) on Saturday at 2pm and Nipissing (1-7) on Sunday at 2pm. Last weekend Queen's dominated the RMC Paladins in four sets (3-1) and were defeated in exhibition by Team Canada FTC (1-3). On Friday in the first set Queen's defence was impenetrable asÂ
Aidan Roos (West Elgin, Ont.) andÂ
Dylan Hunt (Aurora, Ont.) set the tone for the match with a defensive block against the Paladins to get the first point. Queen's easily beat the Paladins in the first two sets but as RMC stepped up their game in the third set, they managed to come back from a four-point deficit to take a win off an attacking error and forcing a fourth set. The Gaels smoothly finished the final set with a final kill from
Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) and an attacking error by RMC to take it 25-9. Queen's is currently ranked first in the CIS averaging 11.33 digs per set and
Ivo Dramov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) is strongly contributing to that as he is ranked second in the CIS averaging 3.07 digs per set. Â
Waterpolo (W/M)This weekend the Gaels head to Toronto to compete in both the men's and women's water polo OUA Championships from Friday until Sunday. The Gaels will be looking to improve on last year's results where both men's and women's teams placed 5th.
