The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action at home, or how to follow them on the road.
Â
Men's and Women's VolleyballThis weekend the men's and women's volleyball teams kick-off their regular season as they host Windsor on Friday in the Athletics & Recreation Centre in the games of the week. The women's team plays at 6pm and the men's match will follow at 8pm. The men and women both play at the same times on Saturday against Western in the ARC.Â
In preparation for the upcoming season, the Gaels hosted the Queen's Invitational and the men's team came out on top beating all three opponents in four sets or less. Queen's is coming off a season in which they were eliminated from the first round of the OUA playoffs for the second consecutive year. Â The Gaels have nine first and second year players on the team, creating important leadership roles for the few seniors on the young team. Under veteran head coach
Brenda Willis, Queen's will look to start the season with a win.
The Women's team hosted Sherbrooke for three games last weekeend, coming out with a 1-2 record. The Gaels are coming off a season in which they finished above .500, but missed the playoffs for the first time since 2005-06 due to a highly competitive OUA East Division. Queen's has a good mixture of young and returning players and begin their first year under a new head coach
Michael Ling, who joins Queen's after spending 14 years as an assistant coach with the perennially CIS top 10 Alberta Pandas. The Gaels will be looking for a strong start to the season under their new head coach.

Women's Rugby On Saturday at 4pm, the No.6 Gaels head to London to take on the No.10 Western Mustangs in the OUA bronze medal game. Last weekend Queen's faced a tough 29-21 loss against Guelph in the OUA semi-final, losing their opportunity to repeat as OUA Champions. It was an extremely close and well matched game with constant back and forth action from both teams causing numerous lead changes. Miranda Seifert (Regina) put the first try of the game on the board with a successful conversion giving the Gaels a lead. The game came down to the second half where the Gryphons put down two tries widening the gap and shutting down the Gaels.
Queen's hopes to replicate their 50-19 win against Western in the final game of the regular season to win an OUA Bronze medal and return to the CIS Championships. |

Player to watch Melody Clarke #2 H QUEEN'S Melody Clark (Barrie, Ont.) is a player to watch for the Gaels. The fourth-year hooker was one of 17 Queen's women's rugby players to score a try during the regular season. Clark's strong play in the scrums and in open play earned her a spot on the OUA Russell Division All-Star team this year. |
Â
Women's Soccer Wednesday at 3pm the Gaels go head-to-head with the Carleton Ravens on Miklas-McCarney Field in their first OUA playoff game of the year. Queen's currently sits in fourth place in the OUA East and finished with a regular season record of 9-4-3, just one spot ahead of the Ravens who have a 7-5-4 record. The last time the Gaels played Carleton it ended in a nail biting tie with a single goal from Jessie de Boer (North Vancouver, B.C.) late in the second half. If Queen's wins, they will advance to the OUA quarter-final on Sunday, October 26th. Wednesday's match will be a good challenge for the team with the playoff pressure riding over their heads. |

Player to watch Jessie de Boer | #6 | MF | Queen's Gaels co-captain de Boer has been on a tear for Queen's in the second half of the season. She finished tied for the team lead in goals with eight on the season, which incuded a scoring streak of six straight games where she scored all eight of her goals. Queen's will look to their captain who scored the lone goal for Queen's in a draw against Carleton back on October 1. |
Â
Men's Soccer Wednesday at 5:15pm, the Gaels take on Nipissing on Miklas-McCarney Field in the first round of the OUA playoffs. Queen's has seen Nipissing twice this season and came out with a 2-0 win and a 1-1 tie. The latter ended up being much more of a defensive match than anticipated as the Gaels were trailing early but managed to get equalize the game with a penalty kick from captain Chris Michael (Ottawa). Queen's ended their regular season with a 9-2-5 record, ranking them in third place in the OUA East. If the Gaels win, they will advance to the OUA quarter-final on Sunday, October 26th. Queen's looks in good shape going into their first playoff match of the year against the sixth place Nipissing Lakers. |

Player to watch Jacob Schroeter | #16 | SK | Queen's Rookie striker Schroeter had a strong season for the Gaels finishing with six goals on the season including one in the Gaels home win over Nipissing on September 7. He also has made his strikes count this season with two of his six goals registering as the game winners for the Gaels and Queen's is 4-0-0 in games where he scores. |
FootballIn their final game of the season, the Gaels battle the Carleton Ravens on Saturday at 1pm in Ottawa. Last week Queen's dominated York with a landslide 57-10 win. The Gaels put on a nice show for fans celebrating Queen's Homecoming, and fifth year veterans Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) and Alex Carroll (Victoria) had particularly good games in their final matchup at Richardson Stadium. Carroll picked up over 200 yards on passes from McPhee and scored three receiving touchdowns. Queen's hasn't seen Carleton since their football team rejoined the league, so it should be an interesting matchup between the two recently unaquainted teams. The Gaels have had a tough season, having to forfeit their first two games due to the participation of an ineligible player on top of adjusting to the loss of many senior players last year. Queen's will look to win their third game in a row as the young team looks ahead to next season.Â
Men's Rugby This weekend, Gaels host Waterloo at 1pm on Saturday at Nixon field in their last game of regular season. Last weekend the Gaels defeated their long time rivals, the Western Mustangs, overtaking them 33-8. Queen's was on defence early on but an opening try scored by Joseph Yelle (Brantford, Ont.) got the Gaels moving. In the second half Queen's scored four more tries and Adam McQueen (Canmore, Alta) was consistently scoring conversions on each for the Gaels. Queen's has had a strong season with a 6-1 record and are currently on a three game winning streak. The team will be looking to finish off their regular season strong this weekend.   Women's Hockey This weekend the No.3 Gaels host Toronto on Saturday at 3:30pm and Ryerson on Sunday at 2:30pm at the Memorial Centre. On a three game winning streak, Queen's is having a great start to their regular season. With 1,562 people in attendance at the Gaels School Day last Friday, the Gaels beat York in a 5-0 shutout. Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Gaels and improved her OUA leading goal total, burying her fifth goal of the season. Queen's took advantage of York penalties by sinking a few more to increase the lead, and Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) picked up her second win of the season and the first shutout her career for the Gaels with 23 saves. Queen's and Toronto are both atop the OUA with 3-0-0 records, so Saturday's matchup will be a close one. Men's Hockey This weekend the Gaels host Guelph on Friday at 7:30pm and Western on Saturday at 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre. Last week, Queen's came out with six points beating UOIT 2-1 on the road and Concordia 3-2 at home. Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) and Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) scored the game-winning goals for their Gaels. Still early in the season, the Gaels have been dominating their opponents with shots on goal. RowingOn Saturday, the Gaels return to St.Catherines to compete in the OUA Championship and make a bid for the banner. The Brock Invitational Regatta was the last competition Queen's attended, and despite being shutout of first place they were able to win some solid second and third place results. This weekend will be crucial for the Gaels, as these results determine their qualification for the CIS championship in Victoria, B.C. on November 1st.
Â
Cross Country This Saturday, the Gaels host the cross country OUA Championship at 11am on Fort Henry Hill. The women's team is currently ranked No.7 in the CIS and both the men's and women's teams will be fighting for medals this weekend.
Â
Women's Field HockeyThis Friday the Gaels play Dalhousie at the OUA Championship. Queen's finished third in the OUA and their opponents, Dalhousie, won the Atlantic division and join the OUA tournament in the qualifying rounds for CIS Championship.
Â
Women's BasketballThis weekend the Gaels head to Ottawa to play in the Carleton Invitational Tournament. They will be playing Memorial on Friday at 6pm, UQAM on Saturday at 6pm and the host Ravens on Sunday at 2pm.
