HALIFAX, N.S. (October 12, 2014) - Continuing their tour of the East Coast, the Gaels played Dalhousie on Sunday, losing in straight sets, 25-18, 25-11, 25-19. They followed up with their second match against Dalhousie in as many days on Monday taking one set in a 3-1 loss.
In the final matchup on Monday, the Gaels put up a stronger effort but were unnable to slow the home team down falling 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21. The Gaels were led by the veteran duo of
Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) and
Philippe Goyer (Ottawa) who combined for 29 points on the afternoon for the Gaels.
Tyler Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) was strong in the middle for Queen's finsihing with 9.5 points on the day including 13 block assists to go along with his three kills.
Thomas Ellison (Winnipeg) registered 39 assists in the match as the Gaels setter.
The Tigers finished with a combined 31.5 points from the duo of Kristen O'Brien and Connor Maessen who were efficient on the attack for Dalhousie with kill percentages of 0.433 and 0.706 respectively. As a team the Tigers won the match on effiecieny from the net killing at a rate of 0.302 compared to the Gaels mark of 0.183
On Sunday, Queen's struggled to produce offensively due to superb blocking from the Tigers.
Markus Trence (Orangeville, Ont.) and
Scott Brunet (Calgary) were the most successful hitters for the Gaels, as they finished with six and five kills, respectively, and neither committed an attacking error in the match. Starting setter Ellison registered 17 assists.
Dal ended the match with 26 assisted blocks, including 10 from Matthew Donovan. Bryan Duquette had a game-high 14 kills for the Tigers, while Dal's Adam Sanderson registered a game-high 10 digs. As the Tigers setter, Jonathan MacDonald made 33 assists to go with five kills of his own.
Defensively, Queen's had no answer for Dal's attacks, as Trence and
Ivo Dramov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) each had a team-high four digs.
The Gaels return home to host their exhibition invitational tournament this weekend during homecoming.
