KINGSTON, Ont. (October 10, 2014) -
Miranda Seifert (Regina) put three tries on the board, as the Gaels topped York 41-21 in a quarterfinal matchup on Friday evening. With the win, Queen's earns a spot in the OUA semifinals against Guelph.
Seifert got the Gaels on the board early, putting down a try just three minutes into a tight first half. After
Karley Heyman (Harrowsmith, Ont.) made the score 10-0 for Queen's with a try of her own, York started to battle back. Emma Jada cut the Gaels lead in half in the 20th minute, and Catherine Belanger's successful conversion narrowed the score to 10-7.
Emma Chown (Barrie, Ont.) responded for Queen's only a minute later, and Heyman's conversion restored the Gaels 10 point lead.Â
As the first half wound down and the second half began, York fought for field position with strong play from their forwards. A trio of penalty kicks from Belanger brought York back into the game, as the Gaels lead dwindled to 17-16 in the early minutes of the second half.
Heyman righted the Queen's side 16 minutes into the second half, when she burst through the York line for her second try of the match. Heyman, charged with all the kicking duties for the Gaels with
Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) on the sidelines, put the ball through the posts to put Queen's up 24-16. Seifert scored her second try of the game just a few minutes later, blowing by York's would-be tacklers down the right wing. Gaels teammate
Caitie Ryan (Kamloops, B.C.) followed suit, and another Heyman conversion made it 36-16 Queen's heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Strong running from York's Fedelia Omoghan set up a Lions try for Krista Kent. After an unsuccessful conversion, Seifert countered York's try with her third of the match, once again showcasing her speed to get into the try zone. Although Heyman was unsuccessful on the final conversion, she contributed 16 points on a pair of tries and three conversions in the Gaels 41-21 victory.
Queen's moves on to play Guelph in the OUA semifinal on the road on Saturday, October 18, while York is eliminated from the playoff race.
