TORONTO, Ont. (October 9, 2014) - At this year's Athletics Ontario Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Toronto, the late Rolf Lund, who was appointed the first Chair of Athletics at Queen's in 1988, was inducted into the Athletics Ontario Hall of Fame.
Lund began coaching football, gymnastics, and Nordic skiing at RMC in 1961, before joining the faculty of the School of Physical Health and Education at Queen's in 1963, where he also coached cross country, skiing, and track and field. Lund, in over 25 years of coaching track and field and over 20 years with the cross country team, brought numerous championship titles and medals to Queen's at the provincial and national levels. It's due to his hard work and dedication to sport as a coach, educator, and athletic administrator that Lund was inducted into the Athletics Ontario Hall of Fame as a "Builder" on September 27 of this year.
Before passing from a long bout with cancer on February 13, 2004 in Kingston, Lund was first inducted into the Kingston & District Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 as a "Builder" in track and field. Lund was president of the Ontario Track and Field Association for 13 years, was elected the chair of Athletics Canada in 1996, and held numerous senior staff positions internationally at the World Student Games, Pan American Games, World Track and Field Championships, and the Olympic Games in 1996.
Lund's legacy lives on, not only through the continued success of the Gaels cross country and track and field teams, but also in the community through races such as The County Marathon in Wellington, Ontario, whose top male runner receives the Rolf Lund Trophy.
