BOX SCORE SUDBURY, Ont. (February 20, 2013) – The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team was in action Wednesday evening against the Laurentian Voyageurs, in their OUA Quarterfinal bout that saw the Gaels eliminated in a 93-80 loss.
Queen's took the energy from Ben F. Avery Gymnasium early with
Nikola Misljencevic (Ottawa) grabbing an early defensive rebound, following up with a lay-up, and
James Asefa (Toronto) knocking down a three-pointer. A
Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) three capped off a Gaels 8-3 run. Laurentian was able to answer however, with guard Alex Ratte (Ottawa) starting a 21-7 Voyageurs run to close out the first quarter.
Rookie guard
Mark Paclibar (Minesing, Ont.) got Queen's on the board first in the second, making a statement with a deep three. Paclibar followed up with a lay-up to start a 9-4 Gaels run. After a Laurentian lay-up, Queen's was able to answer with a 9-2 run, highlighted by a
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) three-pointer. The Voyageurs were able to bring the energy of the crowd back and muster a 23-9 run to end the quarter, with Manny Pasquale (Victoria, B.C.) hitting four from beyond the arc, and Georges Serresse (Blezard Valley, Ont.) throwing down a dunk. The Voyageurs were leading 52-38 at half.
The third quarter featured even play between both teams, with each team making tough defensive stands. The Gaels and Voyageurs exchanged points throughout the third, with Laurentian narrowly outscoring Queen's 21-20 in the frame.
The Voyageurs started where they left off at the end of the second quarter, with Pasquale and Serresse combining for seven of Laurentian's 10 points early in the final quarter. Singh was able to help the Gaels muster a run to close out the game, with the rookie guard contributing 10 fourth quarter points. Queen's was able to outscore Laurentian 22-20 in the fourth, but it was not enough to climb back from the large double digit deficit they gave up in the second quarter.
Faulkner was the team leader for the Gaels with 26 points, while Singh contributed a noteworthy 22 points and a team high three assists. Voyageurs guard Pasquale was the game leader with 33 points and six assists.
