BOX SCORE TORONTO (January 19, 2013) - The Queen's Gaels men's hockey team (8-9-4) were in action Saturday night in their second game of a two-game road trip against Toronto, and pulled away an upset 4-3 overtime victory. In overtime it was fourth year forward
Joey Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.) playing the overtime hero and potting the game winner off a passing play from
Steve Schmidt (Campbell River, B.C.) and defenseman
Patrick McEachen (Stoufville, Ont.).
In the first period it was all Toronto, with the Varsity Blues capitalizing on two of Queen's four first period penalties. First it was forward Jeff Brown (Toronto) putting the puck past Gaels goalie
Riley Whitlock (Calgary) mid-way through the first, followed by Matt Walters (Winnipeg) five minutes later; giving the Varsity Blues a 2-0 lead late in the first period. The Gaels were able to put some pressure on late, putting some shots on Garrett Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.) who stopped all of Queen's 10 shots after one.
The second period featured more even play with both teams exchanging opportunities however it was the Gaels coming out on top. Defensemen
Alexi Pianosi (Halifax) was able to capitalize on the Gaels second power-play opportunity of the game, finding a hole past Blues net-minder Sheehan. Queen's was able to stay out of the box in the second period and Whitlock was strong in net turning away all 19 of Toronto's shots—the Gaels finished the period with 20 shots, the highest period shot total of the game.
Defensive battles highlighted the third period, with both teams only recording eight shots. Queen's and Toronto each tallied two penalties a piece, with Toronto capitalizing on the lone power-play opportunity. Paul Van De Velde (Mariapolis, Man.) beat Whitlock with Tim Halloran (Scarborough, Ont.) and Michael Markovic (Toronto) assisting on the play. Five minutes later the Gaels were able to answer with forward
Corey Bureau (Amherstview, Ont.) netting his seventh goal of the season from Pianosi and Derochie. The third period closed out with a 3-3 score, forcing overtime.
Not even a minute into the overtime period Toronto found themselves in the penalty box with defenseman Lane Werbowski (Winnipeg) getting called for roughing. Derochie was able to beat Blue's goaltender Sheehan off a passing play from Schmidt and McEachen, completing the upset.
Queen's looks to continue their success when they host the RMC Paladins on Wednesday—the Gaels are currently undefeated against the Paladins this season, posting a 2-0 record against their rival. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre.
