BOX SCORE NORTH BAY, Ont. (Janauary 18, 2013) - The Queen's Gaels men's hockey team (7-9-4) were in action Friday night in their first match of a two-game road trip. The Gaels were blanked in North Bay at Memorial Gardens Arena on Friday against Nipissing, falling 3-0 in a game highlighted by 45 minutes of penalties, with neither team capitalizing on their power-play opportunities.

Despite being outshot by the Gaels, the Lakers were able to find the back of the net first with winger Grant Toulmin (Langley, B.C.) scoring off a pass from fellow winger Dorian Peca (Oakville, Ont.). Queen's outshot Nipissing 10-7 after one. The Gaels also found themselves on some lengthy power-plays in the first due to Lakers majors however could not find any productivity with the man advantage.

Queen's continued its offensive pressure on Nipissing in the second frame, tallying a total 17 shots in the period. Lakers net-minder Daniel Spence (Langley, B.C.) was strong for Nipissing turning away all the Gaels 32 total shots, with over half of them coming in the second. Even though Queen's dominated the shot tally, the same could not be said for the score as the Lakers were able to  score with under a minute left in the second to go up 2-0.  The Nipissing goal included all three forwards on the ice with forward Kevin Rebelo (Hamilton, Ont.) scoring from line mates Mackenzie Keirstead (St. John, N.B.) and Vern Cooper (Waswanipi, Que.).

In the third period it was the Lakers pouring on the pressure offensively, firing 15 shots on Gaels fifth-year goaltender Riley Whitlock (Calgary). Whitlock finished the evening with an impressive 30 saves. Nipissing was again able to find the net with Toulmin netting his second of the night and tenth of the season from a Conor O'Donnell (Hamilton, Ont.) pass. Although the Gaels were only outshot by one, 33-32 they could not find an answer for Lakers goaltender Spense.

The Queen's Gaels men's hockey team hopes to pull off a split on their road trip as they now head to Toronto where they visit the Varsity Blues. Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm at the Varsity Arena.
