Queen's Alunma Stefanie Reid with Silver Medal

Queen’s Alumna Wins Silver at Paralympic Games

| By:
Kingston, Ont. (September 17, 2012) – Queen's University Athletics and Recreation proudly recognizes alumna Stefanie Reid on her performance at the recently-completed London Paralympic Games.

Reid, competing for Great Britain in the F44 classification, took the silver medal in the Long Jump F42/F44 event with a jump of 5.28m, a personal best and 0.4 metres further than her closest rival in the event. She also broke the Paralympic record twice during her event. Due to a lack of entrants, the F42 and F44 categories were combined, and the final standings were determined by a points system. The gold medal went to Australian Kelly Cartwright. Reid, who has one leg amputated below the knee, is classed as an F44 competitor, while Cartwright, whose leg was amputated above the knee, is classified at F42.

“I'm thankful to my alma mater Queen's University for supporting me as I started my career in track and field," said Reid. "As a former Gael I'm so proud to win this silver medal and hope it motivates all Gaels athletes.”

“We are proud of all Stefanie accomplished in London,” said Janean Sergeant, Manager of Interuniversity Sport with Queen's University Athletics and Recreation. “During her time at Queen's she transitioned to track and field from rugby, and just look at how far she has come in such a short period of time. She is truly a source of inspiration for our athletes.”

Reid graduated from Queen's in 2006 with a B.A. in Biochemistry and Life Sciences and competed for three years on the Gaels' track team, winning the OUA Community Service Medal in 2006.  Reid has also competed for Canada in the Beijing Paralympic Games, where she took home a bronze medal in the 200m.
