KINGSTON, Ont. (September 15, 2012) -
Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) led the No. 5-ranked Queen's Gaels with two tries and four conversions in their 67-8 win over U of T in OUA women's rugby action, Saturday. The first-year center had an outstanding game as the Gaels cruised to the win in their third league game.
Popov put the first points on the board with a try in the fourth minute after an incredible 65-yard run. This started a 36 point scoring streak for the Gaels.
Natalie Poirier scored the second try in the ninth minute on a 20 yard run, followed by Popov's second try of the game. Also contributing to the scoring in the first half
Liz Hobbs of Stittsville, Ont., and
Bronwyn Corrigan of Waterloo, Ont., who each scored a try.
U of T attempted to claw their way back into the game in the last few minutes of the first half, with Karla Telidetzki scoring a try in the 36
th minute on a 20 yard run after a break down in the Gaels lineup. The score at the end of the first half stood 36-5 for Queen's.
U of T began the second half strong, and seemed to have gained momentum from their try in at the end of the first half. A drop goal by Nicole Baker in the 47
th minute brought the score to 36-8. However, this did not faze the Gaels as they went on to score 31 points in the second half, through a combination of tries and successful conversion kicks. Contributing to the scoring in the second half were
Caitie Ryan of Kamloops, B.C. (2 tries), Hobbs, Popov and
Kayla Roote of Peterborough, Ont. - each of whom scored one try, along with three conversions by Corrigan.
Queen's (3-0) will visit Trent on Friday September 28
th.
