KINGSTON, Ont. - Just a day after falling to Wilfrid Laurier in penalty kicks, the Queen's Gaels women's soccer team put their CIS hopes on the line against the Marauders on Sunday at Matt Anthony Field in Ottawa. The Gaels took their second straight game to penalty kicks, this time with a different result. In a rather unusual PK shootout, featuring great saves by both goalkeepers, Queen's took it in the eighth round, winning 2-1 (4-3 PKs) to capture the OUA bronze medal.
Queen's, who also punched their ticket to their fourth straight CIS Championships with the win, won the game in the eighth round of penalty kicks when rookie
Laura Callender of Nepean, Ont. connected on her chance followed by a miss from McMaster's Adrienne Harrison of Burlington, Ont.
In what became another close OUA tournament game, as it has been all weekend, both the Gaels and Marauders took turns in controlling the game throughout the 120 minutes played before the shootout. The Marauders would get on the scoreboard first. In the 16th minute, Gaels defender and OUA East Second Team All-Star
Mikyla Kay scored an own goal, putting McMaster up 1-0. With three minutes left to play in regulation, OUA East First Team All-Star
Riley Filion of Alexandria, Ont. came through for the Gaels, scoring in the 87th minute to tie the game up and force extra time.
During the two 15-minute extra time halves, both the Gaels and Marauders had chances to win it, but were unable to convert, sending the game to penalty kicks.
After the first two shooters scored, the Marauders' Cristina Leonardelli of Woodbridge, Ont. had her shot stopped by Gaels goalkeeper
Madison Tyrell of White Rock, B.C. However, goalkeeper Brittany Duffey of Markham, Ont. responded for the Marauders in the fourth round and turned away Queen's
Sara Buckham of Burlington, Ont. Tied at three goals a piece, after four rounds of penalties, the remaining two shooters missed, setting the stage for sudden death rounds. The next four shooters also missed. Finally, in the eighth round, Callender calmly found the back of net, beating Duffey, but Harrison missed for McMaster, giving the Gaels the OUA bronze medal and sending them through to the CIS Championship this coming week.
The Marauders finish fourth at the OUA Championship for the third year in a row after falling to the Gee-Gees the past two years in the bronze medal game.
Up next, the defending champs Queen's Gaels will travel to Victoria, B.C. and open the defence of their back-to-back national championships on Thursday, November 8 with quarterfinals at Centennial Stadium, on the campus of the University of Victoria.
