BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. - The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team could not find an answer for the Windsor Lancers' strong shooting as they fell, 118-82, on Friday evening at the ARC Main Gym. The Lancers were very productive from beyond the arc, shooting 53%, led by Enrico Diloreto (London, Ont.), who went four-for-eight from three-point range.
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaels (5-2) with 19 points, while
Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto, Ont.) had 11 and
Roshane Roberts (Vaughan, Ont.) added 10.
For Windsor (5-2), Michael Petrella (Brantford, Ont.) came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points, on 7-for-8 shooting, while four other Lancers hit double figures as Diloreto scored 15, Rotimi Osuntola, Jr. (Windsor, Ont.) added 13, Nana Ntim had 11 and Ismar Seferagic chipped in with ten.
The Gaels were very impressive to open the game, and the crowd got into the game early. A Faulkner dunk early followed by a down-low pass to
John Lenz (Ottawa, Ont.) got things rolling for the Gaels. Faulkner scored seven straight points to cap an 11-5 Gaels run. Late in the first quarter, the tide turned for the Gaels, with the Lancers draining consecutive three-pointers from Petrella, Diloreto and Osuntola. A 22-6 run from the Lancers closed out the first quarter, putting Windsor up 34-22.
The Gaels improved in the second quarter, with Roberts taking the helm early picking up a pivotal rebound then taking it to the other end for a basket. Another coast-to-coast effort from Roberts helped the Gaels pull within 12, making it 40-28 in favour of Windsor. Late in the second the Lancers put on another push and led the Gaels 64-42 at the break.
Queen's was able to keep the third quarter close with
James Asefa (Toronto, Ont.) setting up the offense, completing a few perfectly placed passes down-low and making a timely three to give the Gaels some momentum. Another late push by the Lancers late allowed them to regain the momentum going into the final frame, outscoring the Gaels marginally in the third, 20-19, and holding an 84-61 lead.
In the fourth quarter it was Windsor making a statement early, going on an early scoring spree. After trailing by as many as 30, the Gaels battled back with tight defense. After recording four steals, Queens was able to generate some much needed offense with both
Cy Samuels (Vaughan, Ont.) and Roberts generating three-point plays. First-year guard
Mark Paclibar (Minesing, Ont.) may have had the highlight of the game play late in the fourth with an and-one spin shot from deep inside the arc. Although they still came short, the Gaels showed impressive efforts at times, and were quicker defensively recording 15 steals.
The Queens Gaels men's basketball team is next in action Saturday evening when they host rival Western Mustangs. Tip-off is set for 8 pm at the ARC Main Gym.
