KINGSTON, Ont. - The No. 7 Queen's Gaels fell 1-0 (5-4 penalty kicks) to the No. 6 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA women's soccer semifinal action on Saturday afternoon at Matt Anthony Field in Ottawa. Now, Queen's must win the bronze medal game to punch their ticket to the CIS National Championship.
Laurier, who advances to their third consecutive OUA Championship game, guaranteeing a spot at the CIS National Championship with the win, won the game in the sixth round of penalty kicks when rookie Kiara Reyes of Kitchener, Ont., connected on her chance followed by a miss from Queen's
Breanna Burton of Ottawa.
In what was another classic battle between these two rivals, both the Hawks and Gaels took turns in controlling the game throughout the 120 minutes played before the shootout. The Golden Hawks held a slight advantage in the first half as Laurier outshot Queen's 8-5. But, Queen's responded stronger in the second half, but the game remained scoreless as regulation time proved how equal the two teams are. Both teams registered 12 shots and both goaltenders appearing to be almost impossible to beat.
During the two 15 minute extra time halves, both the Hawks and Gaels had a chance to win it, but even extra time would ultimately solve nothing as the game was sent to penalty kicks. After both goaltenders made enormous saves for their respective teams in the second round, it would take several shooters each to break the deadlock. Finally, in the sixth round, Reyes calmly deposited her shot in the bottom left corner, while Burton narrowly missed the top left of the net, sending the Golden Hawks to Sunday's championship match.
Queen's will now face the McMaster Marauders in tomorrow's bronze medal match. Game time is set for 11 a.m. at Matt Anthony Field and the game will be streamed live on SSN Canada. The Gaels must win the match in order to book their spot in the CIS Championship and have a shot at a three-peat.
NOTES: The game marked the fourth straight season that Laurier and Queen's have met at the OUA Final Four...both teams have now won twice over that stretch...Laurier will now compete in their third straight CIS Championship tournament next week in Victoria, B.C....Cellucci led all players with four shots in the contest.
