Bonsu’s 18 leads Golden Hawks over Gaels in regular season opener

BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. – Doreen Bonsu's double-double led the Laurier Golden Hawks to a 68-64 win over the Queen's Gaels in OUA women's basketball action at the ARC Main Gym, Friday. The Oakville, Ont., native scored 18 points on 9-for-12 shooting and added a game-high 13 rebounds, as the Hawks prevailed in a back-and-forth contest.
 
For Queen's, Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) and Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) led with 16 points each. Boag also added a game-high five assists. Two other Gaels were in double figures, as Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) scored 12 and Sydney Kernahan (Calgary, Alta.) added ten. Bullard and Kernahan each pulled down a team-high nine rebounds for the Gaels, who held a 45-42 edge on the boards.
 
Aside from Bonsu, Laurier had three other players score ten points apiece: Amber Hillis (Hamilton, Ont.), Kimberley Yeldon (Ottawa, Ont.) and Whitney Ellenor (Pickering, Ont.).
 
The Gaels took an early 11-8 lead, but Laurier used a 7-0 run to go on top 15-11, and led 21-15 after the first quarter. The Hawks led through most of the second period, although the Gaels did briefly lead, 29-28, late in the period after a layup by Wright. But Laurier scored the last four points of the half to take a 32-29 halftime lead.
 
The second half got off to a quick start, as Queen's scored nine points in the first 2:15, bringing the game to a 38-38 tie. The teams fought to a draw through the remainder of the period, with the game tied 47-47 after 30 minutes.
 
In the fourth quarter, a 6-0 run by Laurier put them on top for good, as the Gaels could not get any closer than three points down.
 
The teams were roughly even from the field, with Laurier holding a slight 39%-38% lead. The Gaels went 7-for-17 from the three-point line, while Laurier was 2-for-8. Laurier went 12-for-18 from the three-point line, including 8-for-12 in the fourth quarter. Queen's was 5-for-10. Ball control favoured the visitors, as the Gaels committed 15 turnovers, while Laurier only made eight.
 
The Gaels are now 5-4 overall (3-3 vs. CIS, 0-1 OUA) and return to action on Sunday afternoon, as they host the Waterloo Warriors. Tipoff at the ARC Main Gym is set for 1 p.m.
