BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. – Rookie guard
Sukhpreet Singh scored ten fourth-quarter points to lead the Queen's Gaels to a come-from-behind win, 83-80, over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA men's basketball play at the ARC Main Gym, Friday. The Torontonian finished with 19 points in the game, including going 8-for-10 from the free-throw line, as the Gaels came back from an 11-point third-quarter deficit to pick up their first win in a regular-season opener since 2008.
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) picked up a double-double, with a team-high 26 points and 11 rebounds. Along with Singh,
Roshane Roberts (Vaughan, Ont.) and
James Asefa (Toronto, Ont.) picked up 14 points each.
Laurier was led by Maxwell Allin (Chatham, Ont.), who scored 30 points on 9-for-21 shooting and grabbed 18 rebounds. Kyle Enright (Oakville, Ont.), who had 14 points, and William Coulthard (Oakville, Ont.), who had 10, were the only other Hawks in double figures.
The Hawks led 18-15 after the first quarter, and 40-35 at halftime. The Hawks led by as many as 11 points, at 53-42, in the third quarter, and were up by seven, 60-53, after 30 minutes.
Laurier extended their lead to nine at 71-62 before the Gaels mounted their comeback. Queen's went on a 17-6 fourth-quarter run to erase the nine-point deficit. A three-pointer by Faulkner tied the game at 77-77, and a Roberts layup on the Gaels' next possession put Queen's up for good.
Trailing 83-80 with six seconds left, the Hawks had the ball with a chance to tie, but a pair of three-point attempts fell short, giving the Gaels their first win over Laurier since 2009.
Queen's improves to 7-7 overall (5-4 vs. CIS, 1-0 OUA) and hosts the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday. Tipoff at the ARC Main Gym is set for 3 p.m.
