Varsity Clubs Update

BASEBALL: The Gaels are coming off a busy weekend, playing six games in four days.  On Thursday night, the Gaels fell 6-5 to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo. Jeremy McDonald had a strong pitching performance. Then the Gaels hosted the Western Mustangs and the Laurier at Megaffin Park. On Friday, Queen's lost 13-1 to Western and lost both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, 13-2 and 11-2. On Sunday, the Gaels split the doubleheader against Laurier. They lost 16-13 in the first, despite a furious rally in the late innings, then won the second 3-2 on a walk-off single by John Harris in the seventh inning. James Carter pitched a complete game and picked up the win.
UP NEXT: The Gaels have another busy week on tap, with five games scheduled. On Tuesday, they host a rescheduled doubleheader from September 22 against McMaster at Megaffin Park. On Friday, the Gaels visit St. Catharines to play Brock, followed by a single game against Toronto in Scarborough.
 
FASTPITCH: The Gaels hosted a pair of doubleheaders this past weekend at Garrigan Park in Kingston, Ont. Queen's split the doubleheader against Laurier on Saturday. The Gaels fell in the 11-2, and won in the nightcap, 2-1. On Sunday, the Gaels again split a doubleheader against Waterloo, losing in the first game 14-7 and winning the second 10-5.
UP NEXT: The Gaels head to Ottawa this weekend to play the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday (5 p.m.) and Carleton Ravens on Saturday (2 p.m).  
 
GOLF: This past weekend, the Queen's women's golf team competed in the Waterloo Invitational, held at Cambridge Golf Club and the men's team competed in the Waterloo/Laurier Invitational, held at Whistle Bear and Grey Silo Golf Club. Russell Bowie tied for fifth shooting a hard earned 69 and 75, for a total of 143. Teammates followed Russell's low number with Jordan Gregoris (74. 70), Matt LaRiviere (77, 71), Echo Chan (74, 82), and Taylor Henderson (74, 82). As a team, the men placed fifth out of 11 teams. Jenn Kates led the Queen's women's team, shooting 82 and 86, followed by Alex Rawn (89, 84).
On Monday, the Gaels men won gold at the Gryphon Invitational at the Cutten Club in Guelph, with an aggregate of 299. Russell Bowie was the top individual for Queen's, with a score of 72. The women strugged, with an aggregate score of 285, led by Jenn Kates' 85.
UP NEXT: The Gaels are at the Toronto Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Royal Ashburn Golf Course.
 
LACROSSE (W): The Gaels headed to Guelph on Saturday to play a doubleheader against Toronto and Guelph. Queen's lost 9-8 to Toronto and then 13-5 to Guelph. “A tough weekend. A tight loss (9-8) to a highly motivated Toronto took the wind out of the team sails. Guelph beat us in the afternoon (13 -5),” said Pat Bolland, the Gaels' head coach.
UP NEXT: The Gaels head to Hamilton for a single game against a surging McMaster team this Saturday (11:30 a.m.).
 
LACROSSE (M): The Gaels picked up two wins this past weekend. On Friday night, Queen's beat Concordia 17-0. Matt Eriksen picked up ten points, while the defensive corps, led by Ryan Zoehner, kept Concordia off the board with a stellar performance to give the Gaels their first win since 2010.  On Saturday, the Gaels travelled to Trent and dumped the Excalibur 12-7. Matt Eriksen (4-1) and Alex Wright (3-2) led the Gaels with five points each. 
UP NEXT: The Gaels are off for Thanksgiving, and will return to action with a home-and-home series against Carleton on Oct. 13-14.
 
SAILING: The sailing team hosted the Queen's Open at the Kingston Yacht Club this past weekend. Nine schools were represented and Queen's finished second. The team also travelled to St. Mary's College of Maryland and finished 13th out of 14 highly competitive teams at the MAISA Women's Fall Dinghy.
UP NEXT: The Gaels travel to Larchmont, NY on Saturday to compete at the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta.
