BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (February 12, 2011) -
Nikola Misljencevic of Ottawa posted a career high 29 points and led the Queen's Gaels to a 101-92 overtime victory against the Laurentian Voyageurs.
The win was historic for Queen's as it marks the first time in team history that they have passed 100 points twice in one season, and the first time they scored 100 on consecutive nights as the Gaels defeated the York Lions 102-64 on February 11. It is also the second time Queen's has scored 100 points in an overtime victory - the first being a 106-98 victory over Toronto in 1993.
Queen's started slowly as they fell behind to Laurentian in the first quarter. Brothers Manny and Isiah Pasquale from Victoria led the Voyageurs on the strength of their perimeter shooting.
The Gaels began to take control in the second half, however, as Misljencevic established his presence down low. Strong defence from Tim Boyle of Belleville, Ont. limited the Pasquale brothers' shooting opportunities which aided the Gaels effort as they took a 42-41 lead into the half.
Queen's continued their strong play into the third quarter with help from the bench.
Ryan Golden of Barrie, Ont. and
Jordan Kirchberger of Orleans, Ont. both had good quarters with Golden giving the Gaels solid guard play to compliment Kirchberger's post presence.
The fourth quarter saw the Voyageurs make a late comeback. Despite big shots down the stretch from Boyle and
Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont. the Voyageurs would ultimately tie the game on a three point shot from Manny Pasquale with seven seconds remaining.
Boyle got an open three point look with one second on the clock, but his shot did not fall which forced overtime.
The Gaels started overtime with possession and made the most of it as Bannister,
Chris Barrett of Vancouver, and
Bernard Burgesson of Port Hawkesbury, N.S. all made early field goals which put the game out of reach. Laurentian's hopes were dashed when Isiah Pasquale fouled out of the game with less than one minute remaining in overtime.
The Gaels shot 49.3% from the field, almost 10% above their season average. Boyle was the Gaels' leading rebounder with eight. Five Gaels - Bannister, Burgesson, Misljencevic, Boyle, and Golden - reached double digits in points.
Prior to today's game a ceremony was held to honour the three graduating Gaels - Barrett, Bannister, and Boyle.
The Gaels will finish their season on February 19 against RMC in the Main Gym of the ARC. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm.
