KINGSTON, Ont. (October 24, 2011) - This past weekend the Queen's Gaels women's lacrosse squad defended their bronze medal at the OUA Championship in Guelph.
On Friday, Queen's faced the McMaster Marauders in their quarter-final matchup and won handily by a 14–8 score. First year mid-fielder Teresa Mayo led eight different scorers with three goals as only three Gaels were held off of the scoresheet. Co-player-coach Jackie Byers won Queen's player of the game.
The win advanced the Gaels to the semis-finals against a Western Mustangs team that hadn't lost all year. The Mustangs opened a four goal lead early in the game and while Queen's evened the game up after that, they couldn't keep pace with the Mustangs, losing 11-5. Mayo won player of the game for the Gaels for her two goal performance.
The bronze medal game against U of T saw Toronto score first, but the Gaels charged back, led by Mayo's three goals and a diligent defense anchored by graduating veteran
Darcy Vidler who also won Queen's player of the game. The final score was 10 – 6.
During the season, Byers led the team with 34 goals and 50 points, followed by Mayo with 28 and 35 and forward
Marsha Cryderman with 20 and 25.
The Gaels graduate five players this year and will miss Byers and Vidler, who both won OUA All-Star team awards, as well as co-player-coach mid-field Gwyn Ross, and forwards
Nicole Allen and
Jess Allum. The Gaels thank them for their years of hard work and wish them continued success.
