Gaels can't overcome stiff opposition at Naismith Classic

| By:
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 16, 2011) - The Queen's Gaels will return to Kingston from a trip to the 44th annual Naismith Classic empty handed, as they dropped their three contests in the tournament.

In their first game, the Gaels couldn't find their shooting touch as they shot 26 percent from the floor en route to a 91-62 loss against the host Waterloo Warriors. Ryan Golden of Barrie, Ont. led the Gaels on offence with 19 points while Nikola Misljencevic of Ottawa chipped in with 11.

The Gaels struggled again in their second game against OUA East rivals, the Ryerson Rams. The Gaels fell to the Rams by a 76-58 scoreline. Bernard Burgesson of Port Hawkesbury, N.S. was the top scorer for the Gaels with 19 points from the floor.

In their third and final game, the Gaels pushed the UBC Thunderbirds to the brink but ultimately could not beat their western opposition as they finished on the wrong side of a 66-61 scoreline. Ottawa's Mackenzie Simpson was the Gaels leading scorer in this contest as he posted a game high 22 points against the Thunderbirds.

The Gaels resume their pre-season schedule this weekend when they go to Laval University to take on the Rouge-et-Or and the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The tournament tips off for the Gaels on October 22 at 7 pm.
