KINGSTON, Ont. (October 1, 2011) - On a day that saw winds as high as 50km/h the No. 10 Gaels (3-1) and No. 5 (tie) Marauders (4-0) battled in a tight defensive game. In the end a second half try by the Marauders was enough to top the Gaels 5-3.
Early on in the match the Gaels were able to contain the McMaster attack and push the ball up the field.
Bronwyn Corrigan of Waterloo, Ont. got the Gaels out to an early lead with a penalty goal putting Queen's up 3-0.
The Gaels continued to push forward in the first half as they played a strong defensive game controlling possession heading into the second half.
The Marauders began to make a push early in the second and Alexandra Fairgrieve of Fort Erie, Ont. put McMaster ahead 5-3 with the only try of the day.
Late in the match Queen's moved the ball upfield and pinned McMaster deep in their own end but could not convert any points. With only seconds left in the match the Gaels attempted a conversion but were unsuccessful.
"We came out hard but Mac was the better team today, but we gave them a really hard defensive game which was one of our goals so I think were happy with that." said fourth year veteran
Susan Heald of Burlington Ont. on the loss.
Next week the Gaels will travel to Toronto to take on the UofT Varsity Blues to close out the regular season.
