KINGSTON, Ont. (January 28, 2011) –
Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont., had his best game of the season as he recorded 18 kills and six digs in the Queen's Gaels (13-3) three set win over the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-11) Friday night at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.
Set scores were 25-17, 25-19, 29-27.
The Gaels controlled the match from the start, easily winning the first two sets. However, in the third set, the Varsity Blues pushed the Gaels to the limit and then some but Queen's managed to hold on to win the set to sweep the match.
Queen's has now beaten Toronto in their last 12 meetings dating back to the 2004-05 season.
Matthew Taylor of Toronto, also had a big game for Queen's as he picked up 10 kills to go along with six digs. 13 different Gaels saw court time in the match as Coach
Brenda Willis allowed her starters to rest in the third set.
The Varsity Blues were led on the night by Adam Palmer of Ottawa, who recorded a team-high 10 kills.
A key statistic in the match turned out to be hitting percentage as the Gaels outhit the Varsity Blues 40.7% to just 20.6%.
The Gaels are now off until next weekend when they travel to Toronto to take on the Ryerson Rams and the York Lions. Queen's tangles with the Rams Saturday February 5 at 3:00 pm and will face the Lions Sunday February 6 at 4:00 pm.
