KAMLOOPS, B.C. (March 13, 2010) -
Bryan Fautley of Oakville, Ont., had his best game of the season, posting 21 kills, as the Queen's Gaels defeated the Montreal Carabins in four sets at the CIS men's volleyball championships Saturday afternoon.
The third year outside hitter, who was named the Blackberry Player of the Match, also had five digs in the match. Fautley's previous season high was an 18 kill performance against the Ryerson Rams on November 21st.
The match was very slow and methodical in the first set as both teams looked to see how they would play. Aside from the third set where the Carabins jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back, it was very close. Final set scores were 29-27, 25-22, 16-25, 26-24.
Aside from Fautley, two other Gaels reached double-digits in kills. Second Team All-Canadian Joren Zemman of Cambridge, Ont., had 15 to go along with 3.5 blocks while
Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont., had 11. The three outside hitters were set up all game long by
Daniel Rosenbaum of Hamilton, who finished with 51 assists.
Alex Oneid of Ottawa, was solid defensively recording eight digs.
The Carabins were paced by Emmanuel Andre-Morin of Vaudreil-sur-le-lac, Que. The 2010 Dale Iwanoczko Award winner had 22 kills. Andy Oshima Saitama-Ken, Japan, added 12 kills for Montreal.
With the win, the Gaels will play in the fifth place game on Sunday. Queen's will face the host Thompson Rivers Wolf Pack at 1:00 pm PST (4:00 pm PST).
NOTES: The win was the first for the Gaels at the CIS Championships since 2005-06...that year also marks the Gaels best-ever finish when they finished fifth as well...it was also the Gaels third win overall since they first appeared at the CIS Championships in 1999-2000...their overall record is now 3-8 all-time.
